Branching off of this thread, are privacy policies required, or are they just optional?

Because I didn't feel the need to do so.

If you are looking to use Google Adsense on your forum they require that you have a privacy policy. I don't think that there is an online community patrol that requires you to have one, however from a legal standpoint you want to be covered and have a privacy policy. By posting one you have notified your users of how you intend to use their personally identifiable information (PII) and how you will safeguard it.

If you are not familiar with what PII covers, see this page from Wikipeidia: Personally identifiable information - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EDIT: Sorry! Something was nagging at me and when I responded to the other thread I realized what it was!! California has a law called the California Online PRivacy Protection Act of 2003 (OPPA) that says that commercial sites must have a privacy policy that meets certain requirements. That means if you make any money off your website and your site is open to people from CA you need to have a privacy policy!

Even if you do not run google ads, I think it look more professional to have a privacy policy and an "about this site" page.

I tend to shun sites that do not tell me what they are going to do with my email address.

Not required, per se, but very smart to have.

May not be required in your area but you can have problems if you don't have one.
