I didn't plan on buying domains in bulk, but it could be a great move. With the purchase, I'd get the .com/.net/.biz/.us and the .mobi versions of the domain.

What are the benefits of this, and is this a good deal? The provider would be GoDaddy, by the way.

It stops your competition from buying up those names

Get them off godaddy. I have yet to have a positive experience with that company,.

Hi Kevin! Nice point you made. Would it be possible for all of the domains to redirect to the same site?

I was also thinking GoDaddy. Name.com and Namecheap would be second choices.

Yes they can all be forwarded to the main url.

There is a domain name I want that is owned by someone else who wants a price for it that I don't think is reasonable. For some reason they did not buy the .org, .net and so on. So I did. I don't think they realize what I could do with those, or even that I own them.

I'm not going to be underhanded with them ... but they have undermined their long-term effectiveness with the domain name they aren't using and did not protect very well. Especially since they aren't using it, when I approach them again they might be more willing to settle for a fair price.

Thanks 3Phase! Can't you backorder those domains?

I have a backorder on the one I want. They renewed it when it came due last spring. In the realm of business expense domain names are a fairly nominal cost, some people just keep them for whatever reason.

$28 is definitely nominal - fork out and don't look back. :) :p

And what's on the domain that you want, nothing, right? Spam, links, etc?

Another good thing about purchasing domains in bulk, is if you have forgetful members. If they forget the extension and type in .info instead of .net, for example, they'll be sent to the same site. ;)

Sounds the same to me. Although, I don't want to fall for it just yet. Once I start getting a nice flow of traffic, and then I see the need to, I'll snatch them.

Nothing. It doesn't even lead anywhere any more. It used to have one of those canned webpages you build from a 'kit' type software (like MS Publisher) but now not even that. I was hopeful they would forget or just let it go when the name expired, but no.

Some people are kind of domain name collectors, they own a lot of names but never use them. I don't think that's quite what is going on with this domain name owner, but it is a reason to grab names you are planning on before a 'collector' thinks of it.

    :)

That's just... dumb! Why collect domains and not do anything with them. I mean, later on people may have a plan for the domain, but why purchase in advance. If it's taking this long, I'd expect something large.

But, I agree - maybe I will just buy all of those domains. I just don't want to, and later learn the site will not air like I want it to.

Maybe start out with two first? See what happens next. Get donations
and some vip members (if you plan on that, to get special stuff) then buy the
    other domains.

Id just buy the best of them .com, .net, .co.uk and leave the rest, people buy names early for all kinds of reasons, they may want to develop on them in ten years time, they could want to sell it for more etc

You might want to reverse the order of your preferences: Namecheap, anything else, ... , GoDaddy.

Also keep in mind that come renewal time, you'll probably be paying full price for these domains. ;)

Ak Worm, I will not wait for people to donate in order to buy more domains. All sites should be free in the early stages, I don't want to make people feel obligated to donate.

Michael, that sounds like a good plan. But .co.uk doesn't come with the deal. I guess I can purchase it separately.

Nick, I looked at Namecheap, and it was not cheaper than GoDaddy - the different domains I wanted came to 37.14 dollars. Is there a way to compare prices? Also, nice point about renewal. Let me read up on that.

Sounds like a good deal for a bargain shopper. However I wouldn't personally participate. Have done business with GoDaddy in the past and wouldn't use their service now even if they paid me to take the domains. I had to backorder one of my own domains that I purchased through them because they refused to transfer it to another registrar. That and they liked to send me 20-30 email advertisements a week for additional crap even though I called them up and asked them not to contact me for sales. Those practices are against the law in California but it was more worthwhile to take my business elsewhere, report them to the department of corporations and move on than to sue.

Well, that's what I'm looking for, a bargain! And the domain I want from GoDaddy is just 89 cents! However, with signing up for business there, shouldn't there be a checkbox "Receive Promotional's and GoDaddy Discounts?"

There is. I have found that it doesn't matter if you uncheck it our not. I still get emails from them from time to time. I just have my email client to automatically junk anything that comes from the GoDaddy.com domain now.

Ridiculous. I hope they don't do that to me, because I will transfer in an instant!

I've registered urls with name.com and godaddy.com, name.com is my preference, by a large margin.

I also looked at namecheap.com's website. They are well liked on this and other forums.

If you are fairly new to all of this you may want to consider visiting each website and of course calling each company to see how you like them.

name.com answers quickly with people that know what they are doing and will walk people through the process of what to click on to get things set up.

    Godaddy? I share Waynes opinion.

I'm not sure what $10 or $20 makes a big difference in the long term.

If you are serious about the site then you may want to register derogatory variations of the url e.g. ____sucks.com.
