I think the main benefit of having a friend is that you can limit profile privacy. Certain elements can be shown only to friends.
Now I understand, thanks friend!
LOL... yes I can see that a friend is someone that shows up on a friend list. What fundamental benefits are there to having a 'friend'? How is that better than a PM or other means of communication? I sort of understand visitor messages are a middle ground between public posting and PMs for example, I also understand how a social group adds a benefit if a small group of people want to talk about something that does not justify having a subforum, especially if the topic is unrelated to a site/forum (such as the coffee social group on AA) I can almost understand having a 'contact' to use as a quick method of keeping track of someone on a huge site that which people occasionally need to contact.
Hello friend! I've accepted your friend request! I'm not sure what that does exactly though. Maybe similar to an email address book?
Hey man..quick question. When you post the leaderboards for the contest tomorrow could you check how many points I have?
Thanks! Awesome place you've guys got here. I'm an intermediate forum admin, so there's a lot to learn.

If I could remember my login credentials, I'd check it out. Would you mind sending that to me via a private message (if you don't mind)?
