I'll start.

I miss the days when Hot Scripts, the Resource Index, and others were a great place to find cool new scripts to play with. The ones that weren't just addons for other scripts like Wordpress.
I use to be able to find what I needed and then some. Now I find a lot of dead scripts in their directories and not as many programmers submitting new and exciting scripts.

 

I miss they days when you could throw a forum up and it would be populated over night. My forum has been up for almost 2 months and I have 14 members, its been painful lol. But I am not going to give up.

Was that ever true? What days were those?

 

It was never true.

Indeed, a lot of people tend to forget that most really old forums were practically dead when you look back at them. I mean, 40-50,000 posts after about six or so years? That's not exactly mega success right there (no offence to some people). Indeed, I remember one time in which a 'popular' site had a forum with only about 50 members by the time it shut down.

At best this 'instant hype' was true for a couple of years in the early 00s. But I doubt it.

 

I've been looking at a lot of forums in my own areas of interest, and none were particularly active back in the 'good old days'.

Is that specific to the gaming market? Possibly. But I definitely remember seeing a lot of of forums people called 'active' back on the Internet Archive and seeing some rather low stats in general. I mean, one of the biggest Zelda fan sites/forums in the mid/late 90s probably didn't pass a thousand members total before it shut down. And the same was true of many of its current competitors of the day.

 

I miss the days when countless AOL disks were delivered free with my magazines each month in the real mail.

 

As long as you continue to work hard and promote your content, you'll see results.

 

I miss the days when people wrote content and set up sites because they enjoyed it and just wanted to help people. None of this 'viral' crap. None of this 'let's capitalise on social trends for ad bucks' stuff. None of this get rich quick lark that SEO quickly brought about.

Honestly, the world would be better if these kinds of people and sites just up and left the internet.

 

I actually miss the times where people seemed interested in forum… that and when vBulletin 3.X.X was actually decent and usable software.
