I've decided to get back into the foruming world as I've always loved forums and this happens to be a suitable hobby for someone in the military as all it really needs is a laptop. I used to be a die-hard vBulletin user in its prime vB3 days, before its demise with vB4 and that slap in the face they call vB5. With that being said, vBulletin is definitely out of the question for my new project.

Even back during the vB3 days, I was always had a huge appreciation for MyBB, despite the fact that I only ever used it as a "starting" software to either experiment with new projects or open a new site and soon convert to vB. Right now MyBB is what I'm using for my new project and I'm actually fine with keeping it that way and quite excited tofianlly use it to its full (and free!) potential. I don't think MyBB gets enough credit - it's really great forum software.

However, I am quite curious about XenForo as well. It's totally different than the "old school" vB3/MyBB/IPB style of forum software and I'm wondering if XF is kind of reinventing the forum and becoming something of its own that people would actually prefer over the usual forum model that we all know and love.

So, what I want to know is, if you are a former vB user, did you switch to MyBB or XF (I'm only interested about those two for the purpose of this thread)? If you switched to XF, which I'm sure the majority did, why? MyBB is very similar to vB (and free if that matters to you), so what wasn't good enough about it or what is so appealing about XF to you (at least in comparison to MyBB).

XenForo looks more modern, is more engaging, more intuitive and its addon community is on fire.
MyBB nonetheless is shaping up nicely as a good vb3 replacement.

Switched from vB to Xenforo. Free software is great to start out with but you get what you pay for. Xenforo is modern and up to date. Dedicated and conscientious devs and support staff make it worth the investment.

From what I have read Xenforo is the way forward. vBulletin seems to have lost the plot totally now.

I think Xenforo would be the go for you, it looks like its got a huge future ahead. Maybe look at ipb4 when it comes out?
