I've just done a new interview with Shawn Hogan from Digital Point forums, if interested: "Link Removed".

The interview is excellent, but you're wasting some excellent content on a bad script hosted on a free forum service :(

Agreed, and it is probably wasted as Gary will delete his forum shortly anyhow.

Put it somewhere permanent Gary, it's a good interview. You could let AWS put it up here or something, credited to you.

Thanks, it was short and I didn't really expect Shawn to answer the questions I put to him last night. But he did, which I appreciate.

good interview. odd that xenforo was mentioned in four of the questions, even though he does not run a xenforo forum.

you could say why you don't use your own domain name.

I have enough space on my reseller, drop me a PM and I can help you with the hosting. You need to get a domain name (even a .info would be better) and it's just 3 bucks. Let me know if you need me to buy it for you, I can spare the money. Get yourself a mybb installation and it would be 1000 times better. It's a pity to start anything on such a site :)

I do own a domain name, what makes you think I don't? And more than one in fact. About XenForo, the question about it was asked because IT IS related to Shawn Hogan, seeing as he's in the process of converting things over to move his forum towards using it. Sure you can understand that much, maybe not? And on top of that, I own an active XenForo licence, do you? Do you run XenForo forum or own a licence, I've never seen you on XF?

Well I'm actually running my own dedicated server online most days, and using last release of vBulletin 3.8 (could use vB4 or XenForo if I wanted), plus it uses it's own domain name (to prove to the doubters I have one). I could run the server 24/7 if I wanted, but choose not to do and use the free forum for that instead. In short, I can run a forum myself working perfect, that I have control over everything, server the lot. :)

Thanks for the offer, but I've been offered it before by "AWS" also, which I didn't take up. Truth is, I enjoy running the free forum, it's really that simple and nothing more in it than that. People like Kier Darby, he runs a free Blogger. Matt Mecham, him a free Tumblr. It's no different from what they do on the web, just like many of you here running a free Facebook and Twitter site.

Yes, I was so glad to get rid of that domain, and for a lot of reasons, hence why I more or less - "give it away for free". Good luck to the new owner of it!

I don't know why Mark, but you've always hated it when I run a forum. Maybe one day you'll explain that one? But you do definitely have a "major problem" going with me running one? You can try and fluff that comment away, but we both know better! Not only have you joined every forum I've ever run for over 10 years, but you're never away from it (you're there every day, multiple times). And when you do post there, which you try and avoid doing. I can guarantee it's always some childish silly sarcastic comment about the forum coming from you to try and put it down. You're very obvious Mark, you always have been.

Doesn't bother me, having a forum there just to annoy you is great!

No Gary it's FUNNY when you run a forum because you always say it's here to stay and then you delete it and post a blog post saying you'll never run a forum ever again.

Even on your current forum, you've already deleted at least one thread.

There just isn't any point anyone bothering to post because the content barely lasts a week.

Imagine if AWS kept deleting all the threads here on Admin Addict, then kept closing the forum, the reopening it on a different platform. Nobody would bother to post, I certainly wouldn't.

It's just funny. I can't help it. I'd dearly love to take one of your forums seriously and contribute posts to it but there totally isn't even the slightest point.

    sigh.......... :frown:

Can you you not understand that I've run paid sites for 15 years now, but the time has come for a big change. None of my other sites ever took off, hence why I'm now going down the "unpaid avenue" instead of running a forum. If you can't make sense of that one, there's nothing more I can say really. I just don't think it's worth it anymore paying to run a community, simple as that!

There's much more chance I'll keep a FREE forum running, than I ever would a PAID one these days. And for very obvious reasons - it's free! I have nothing to lose at all in keeping it going, even if not one single person uses it. No skin off my back, it cost me nothing to run it, so what do I care now about keeping it going for many years to come. :)

The only reason it would ever close now, is if ProBoards themselves shut it down.

The only down-side for me with it, I would sooner keep it ads free (you can pay to keep it that way, but then that defeats my whole object of running it). I've read after "so many page views" ads will appear there put in place by ProBoards. But you can't have everything your own way for free, and after all - most other forums show ads these days anyway. So that's nothing new and most people use Ads Blocker software anyway to make them disappear, I use Ads Blocker all the time!

I've never said there's any problem with running a free site. I use a football message board that runs on ProBoards, although again it's like being in the nineties but it works.

My original BC Forums site when we started ten years ago is on Suddenlaunch which is almost identical to Proboards:

    http://markbowland.suddenlaunch2.com/

The issue is you keep deleting boards and deleting content. Why did that thread go? It's no wonder nobody bothers joining in any discussions, some of my posts take a long time to write and I'm not going to do that knowing you'll just arbitrarily delete them in a day or two.

You'll say "I don't care if nobody posts" but then what's the point having interviews and suchlike?

GTB, those are exceptions you're mentioning. Guys staying on blogger, tumblr or all kinds of sites like this. Start a blog on a blogger as a NOBODY as we all are and let me know how it works. Maybe it will have 0.001% to develop. Most sites that mean something are on a proper domain name, with hosting, scripts etc. We're not idiots to pay hundreds of bucks for scripts or custom designs (my clients) just cause we don't have what to do with the money. This is how it's done properly. What if AA was on such a free hosted forum. Would you bother reading it? I wouldn't. Can't imagine what 'success' I'd have with my forum on a free hosted platform. It's difficult to start a new forum even if you pull all the stops (good script, original design, good content, activity etc.), can't imagine how empty it would be if I was to use proboards or who knows what.

Anyway, it's your choice and we have to respect it. As said, it's a pity for such an excellent interview to get lost somewhere on a forum I can't even remember the link, if I don't click it on your message. My offer stands anyway :)

They are not exceptions at all, they are free sites used, when they could pay to host and run their own WordPress Blog. But they don't, Kier doesn't anyway and he can easily afford to do it. :)

Also, I'm not sure why you're offering to host a site for me again. Both my "XenForo and vBulletin" licences are up for sale, they will remain so until sold and will be advertised on other larger sites soon.

You could just "Bookmark The Site", there's no need to remember anything that way and it's what most people do. And I don't know the URL of your forum either to visit, don't even know the name of it of hand? Have it bookmarked to visit.

Sorry, I've removed the link from the first post here now. I went and made a Boo, Boo last night when setting up a new forum and closing the other rushing because it was very late trying to get things done fast.
