Fanboys, peanut gallery, thread stalkers, or whatever you want to call them. Fanboys is a nicer word to post rather than the other names that aren't so nice. Don't you think?

IMHO, I think fanboy is an appropriate word.

    Fanboy http://www.urbandict...php?term=fanboy

An extreme fan or follower of a particular medium or concept, whether it be sports, television, film directors, video games (the most common usage), etc.

Known for a complete lack of objectivity in relation to their preferred focus. Usually argue with circular logic that they refuse to acknowledge. Arguments or debates with such are usually futile. Every flaw is spun into semi-virtues and everything else, blown to comedic, complimentary proportions.

    Known for using the phrase
"Object of affection = Best Ever"
However, while people only really say that as hyperbole, fanboys truly believe it.

Troll the internet to spread the gospel.

Insult/chastise others for using public forums to express an objective opinion, no matter how constructive or, respectful it may be. (Go ahead and admit that it's a good game/movie/etc. This fact and anything else will be promptly ignored in favor of cherry picking the negative, and beating you over the head with it.

Tend to resort to petty annoyance replies when backed against the wall. Usually grammar attacks and non-replies.

The sad thing is, fanboys don't realize, that these companies that fuel their passion, don't really give a damn about us. To me, defending a multi-national corporation like their your own family, is ridiculous. These organizations don't come to your house and help you when you're sick, they don't help you move, or drive you to the airport. They don't support you in any way. It's a business, not a friendship. As soon as you can no longer buy their product, you disappear to them.

    Fanboy/fangirl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_%28person%29
Fanboy is a term used to describe a male who is highly devoted and biased in opinion towards a single subject or hobby within a given field. Fanboy-ism is often prevalent in a field of products, brands or universe of characters where very few competitors (or enemies in fiction, such as comics) exist.
    Etc...

But peggy, its true. Look at that hotlinking thread. Any measure of common sense says IB wasnt hotlinking from his site intentionally and there must be another explanation. They had no problem blaming IB and even ignored when I pointed out it may have been the fault of a previous owner of the offending site. They had no problem vandalizing one of IB's properties either.

Come on Peg -- Some of these people are living outside of reality.

OMG! I cannot believe that forum being run by Internet Brands went and hot-linked to 70 smilies on another persons community using XenForo, and obviously by the admin running it to. It's even hit a tech news site now: http://www.technolog...s-vbulletin-10/

Wow! How dumb was the person in charge of that Internet Brands forum doing that one, the courts could possibly use that against them now.

I see somebody posted up some hot-linking code to use in an htaccess file since in that thread on XenForo about it. I wouldn't waste my time because you'll also block Google and other search engines from indexing site images posted up. And it's too much hassle adding lots of sites to be excluded in it.

You can bet the person running that IB forum has been sacked today.

Not dumb at all necessarily. When you buy a site, you dont go and check EVERY setting like that. The previous owner probably liked the Xenforo smiles and hotlinked to them and IB knew nothing about it. IB has no need to steal bandwidth.

Well obviously different smilies would have been showing up in threads, XenForo ones that are PNG and very different in design to stock vBulletin ones. Not only that, it's very easy to spot they are ones used by XenForo software. So you really don't have to go into the admin settings checking things, it can be very easily spotted on the forum boards themselves in posts to grab your attention towards them fast.

Unless, that community was no longer using "stock smilies" that come with XenForo? Which might have been the case, as I read 70 smilies was linked too. As far as I'm aware I don't think there are 70 XF stock smilies, even Kier's SQL (add more smilies) only lists around 32?

If that was the case, and also Internet Brands didn't acquire that site very long ago. The previous owner hot-linked to them, which I think is more likely and they was overlooked since because they wasn't stock XF smilies (maybe)? Did anyone grab a screen-shot of the smilies pulled, has the owner of that forum complaining shown people the smilies he uses, are they XF stock ones or not?

If the forum was using IPB ones (well they don't belong to IPB), then loads of vB forums use them to replace the crappy vB ones.

Tech news site? Was that posted by the same Walter who posts on xenforo? All of 3 blog posts?

And it's funny how people make fun of vB for that XSS security problem but it's OK that xenforo used the same script.
Seems to me vB updated their forum software first.

So your saying Walter also owns that Tech Blog?

I'm not sure they did use the same script. From what I can gather the vulnerability was introduced into XenForo via a 3rd party script, something the devs didn't code themselves at XenForo. From what I've read, that wasn't the case with vBulletin 4. but I've no idea if that's true or not? Just what I've read posted, maybe your right and it was the same 3rd party script as well used in vB4?

But I know Mark.B mentioned the same as you on XenForo, then got pulled-up by "Kier" and corrected. Read it posted here.

I don't know what to think anymore, seems to me people are just nit-picking at the slightest thing they can these days. End of the day, it was fixed in both XF and vB fast, so what does it matter?

I don't honestly know. Same username on both. It was posted shorted after a post on xf.
Just saying. I could be wrong.
I read Mark's post and that's why I mentioned it.
Everything is nitpicked these days. I guess it's always been that way.
My honeymoon is over with xf. I don't see a need to renew my licenses just yet.
    We'll see what happens.

Well no new estimated date has been given out for XF 1.2. Meaning it could be any time in 2012, 2013, god knows when? Hmm, I don't see that as being a great incentive to make people feel like it's worth renewing, I really don't. If anything, they've just made matters worse.

I mean, even IB are turning around and saying vB5 will most likely come in the latter end of 2012. It's not even in Alpha yet!

Or, possibly, the previous owner did it, sold it to Internet Brands, and nobody noticed.

I would find it highly improbable anyone at IB would have set up smilies like that.

What people are saying is - yes there was a security issue that affected XenForo, but this related to third party code, not code they wrote themselves. Whereas the vBulletin one was code they had written themselves.

This is being used as a "bashing" pivot. The suggestion being, vB writes poor code.

Ultimately it doesn't matter. Security flaws happen. Doesn't matter if it's third party code or not, they need to be fixed. Both XenForo and vBulletin have a very good record at fixing such issues.

That's what I tend to think, and probably the other forum wasn't using stock XF smilies either being hot-linked making things obvious (there's not 70 stock XF smilies). Get the feeling it's another "bread and butter" argument for the XF fan-boys to play on bashing IB. Nothing new, move along......

Looking at it briefly this morning it's been fixed.

Shame some people have to resort to such childish tactics, that sort of thing should only be done if no response is received to legitimate requests to change it.

Certainly does XenForo no favours (though obviously it isn't their fault they have childish customers), especially with the lawsuit, I'm sure Kier wouldn't approve of such tactics.

Still won't stop them hyping on about it for another 3-4 days though, fixed or not. They've got a new freshly cooked bone to gnaw on now!

A mod should have locked that thread, in fact why wasn't it locked right away? I read two other threads getting locked only days ago, saying discussion about vBulletin isn't allowed there? I'm getting confused - is it, or isn't it allowed? I don't think the mods can make their minds up frankly?
