I've got a 'hosted community'. Stripped our vb database down to remove private stuff and to save space, and made it a really tiny shell of what the real site is.

Imported into that account for evaluation purposes, to test what products would be useful.

We are not done but it appears we may go for the full package, which with the 20% discount (5% for 4 add ons) and the $50 credit, comes out to $242. 365 * .8 = 292. 292 - 50 = 242.

Which to me is far better than buying someone elses account, which apparently can be problematic.

One of the big things I didn't care for with IPB was their importing system, and maybe I just had bad luck, but I can import forums into vBulletin much easier and quicker then using ipb's import hack.
Did you have any problems getting the data from vb to ipb?

I'm still playing with it, but looks fine to me. I did it 2 or 3 times. For the forums, Albums -> IP.Gallery, and maybe Calender? The birthdays are a little messed up on the calendar, not sure why.

And I don't think any of the calender events made it over.

    Interesting,

I'm actually thinking about starting a second forum and I have come to like the looks of the IP board. Does anyone know about their hosting?

What would you like to know? As stated I am renting a hosted community that comes with all the software pre-installed. $15/m for the smallest package.

If you mean the hosting without the pre-installed software, I don't know. If you buy a software license they will pre-install it for you on any hosting account for free.

I really wish I'd started with IP at this point.

Their import function (at least from SMF) needs a lot of work. Things are constantly screwed up, paragraph breaks not put where they should be, line breaks not where they should be, it can be a very, very messy thing.

As far as their hosting, I've got to say it's not bad. The techs that work there can be kinda brainless (ie: transfer domain before we'll setup the forum, ignore requests for days/hours), but all in all, the hosting side of things is good enough ;)

Sounds like the $60 conversion process would be worth it to you. It handles vb decent enough.

Naah, the conversion process would only cover the conversion, not putting things back in place properly ;)
I'm not saying it's bad, or that IPB is bad by any means, it just needs a bit more work ;)

IPB doesn't need any more work. It is a fantastic forum software. I've paid developers to start creating mods for it and I'm grateful that they just work well on a great, progressive forum system. vB 4 is missing stability and will for a while. It's also missing many of the vB 3 hacks and it will for a while. The content package is excellent and there is a far more graphic and eye pleasing quality to IPB as well as a simplicity which many users love, especially the new ones. It's been a pleasure so far and glad I got my software on sale first time round.

I'm hoping that now we're on 3.1 that they'll spend a while polishing it up into a "2.3" rather than adding/tweaking/moving stuff around. Needs a bit of bedding in now rather than the push of the last year to get the people over from Vb :)
