No buying vbulletin was not a bad idea. In fact it was genius on their part. They now control the software of most of their competitors use. Why should they make it better for big board owners? In fact what is stopping them from making unusable for them? A company as big as IB could absorb the loss if vbulletin tanked. vBulletin is a drop in the bucket compared to the other enterprises they own. They can milk that cow for at least 3 or 4 more years by selling licenses to start ups. So what if they lose the current customer base. Most of them will not pay for the upgrade anyway. IB knows what they are doing and if you look at what has happened since the first leak of information you have to come to the conclusion that they could care less about making vbulletin better or about the long time customers. They know that if they never sold another license they would still own the most popular software used by most of their competitors. Don't you think that is a good position to be in?
Okay, I meant a bad idea from everyone else's perspective. But yes, for them it was an act of genius. All we can hope now is Internet Brands will actually listen to anyone else... which seems unlikely.
Here's the source by the way: vBulletin Community Forum And yes, it's in response to MRGTB. For that guy, you're probably wondering why I'm nearly the only one posting here... well, I liked the old Admin Addict community, that's it. And I have an ulterior motive for posting here, see if you can figure it out (no, I have no connection to the staff, although I have been offered such a role before...)
Anyone that stays with vbulletin is going to regret in the end. While it is a pain to convert to something different, especially if you own a big board, you have to look long term. IB does not care about the customer. If they could get rid of them all they would. I'm still not so sure that they won't just close up shop in the near future. My bet is the vbulletin 5 will be pushed out sooner rather than later and with a new price increase. The few that remain loyal will abandon them and new sales will dry up. They'll then be in the position they wanted all along.
I like RadioErewan. Smart. Although there some of what he says needs a couple of moments to understand, for me. I'm not sure what you mean by this part: I'm on here daily but have not felt like saying too much.
I'll agree with this part: Personally I don't think they are consciously loosing customers on purpose. On the other hand I've no plans on using anything newer than v3 either, so it really doesn't matter, to me.
Sphinx is a full-text search engine, distributed under GPL version 2. Commercial license is also available for embedded use. Generally, it's a standalone search engine, meant to provide fast, size-efficient and relevant fulltext search functions to other applications. Sphinx was specially designed to integrate well with SQL databases and scripting languages. Currently built-in data sources support fetching data either via direct connection to MySQL or PostgreSQL, or using XML pipe mechanism (a pipe to indexer in special XML-based format which Sphinx recognizes). As for the name, Sphinx is an acronym which is officially decoded as SQL Phrase Index.
Hey guys, Anders here from IB; I am the product manager for this sphinx search product; would like to set the record straight. This thread has a lot of misinformation and some rather far-out theories which are absolutely incorrect. We do have a kick-ass sphinx based search that we use in-house for 3.6-4.0 sites; my team (jokingly called Skunkworks) is responsible for building and maintaining it. We are working on getting it out to community - but it is currently not 100% ready for "mass-consumption". I assure you that there is not a conspiracy here to keep a product away from customers; rather a desire to have an infrastructure in place to provide support for this product if it does become highly adopted by the community. Feel free to reply with good questions and I will do my best to provide answers. Thanks, Anders
AWS: According to the logs and my memory (and I know this for a fact): No post of yours has been deleted, especially from this thread. mrGTB: None of your posts have been deleted either, so I don't have a clue what you are talking about. Please keep your dirty laundry off of AdminAddict and on your own forum. I'm not sure what kind of censorship you guys have been referring to, because none exists here. If you'd like, feel free to PM me to discuss this further (a discussion thread isn't the appropriate place). Let's please get back to the discussion at hand.
