Internet Brands stopping Sphinx integration on purpose?

Okay, I meant a bad idea from everyone else's perspective. But yes, for them it was an act of genius. All we can hope now is Internet Brands will actually listen to anyone else... which seems unlikely.

And yes, it's in response to MRGTB. For that guy, you're probably wondering why I'm nearly the only one posting here... well, I liked the old Admin Addict community, that's it. And I have an ulterior motive for posting here, see if you can figure it out (no, I have no connection to the staff, although I have been offered such a role before...)

Personally I don't think they are consciously loosing customers on purpose. On the other hand I've no plans on using anything newer than v3 either, so it really doesn't matter, to me.

 

I'm looking forward to trying sphinx in... IPB :lol:

 

Anyone care to explain what Sphinx is? Because I am totally lost on this topic.

 

Sphinx is a full-text search engine, distributed under GPL version 2. Commercial license is also available for embedded use.



Generally, it's a standalone search engine, meant to provide fast, size-efficient and relevant fulltext search functions to other applications. Sphinx was specially designed to integrate well with SQL databases and scripting languages. Currently built-in data sources support fetching data either via direct connection to MySQL or PostgreSQL, or using XML pipe mechanism (a pipe to indexer in special XML-based format which Sphinx recognizes).



As for the name, Sphinx is an acronym which is officially decoded as SQL Phrase Index.

Anders here from IB; I am the product manager for this sphinx search product; would like to set the record straight.

This thread has a lot of misinformation and some rather far-out theories which are absolutely incorrect.

We do have a kick-ass sphinx based search that we use in-house for 3.6-4.0 sites; my team (jokingly called Skunkworks) is responsible for building and maintaining it. We are working on getting it out to community - but it is currently not 100% ready for "mass-consumption".

I assure you that there is not a conspiracy here to keep a product away from customers; rather a desire to have an infrastructure in place to provide support for this product if it does become highly adopted by the community.

Feel free to reply with good questions and I will do my best to provide answers.
