Clean Monday in Greece when we fly kites and start the 40 days of Lent

Its difficult to explain but roughly speaking in theory we give up eating animal products for Lent.

and it's not only kids flying kites

kites are mere dots way up in the sky (there is a prize for the highest)

and then back to the meal

a mixture of Cretan and northern Greek dishes

and it's more, a social event, an afternoon of eating, drinking and talking, with people wandering in and out to greet and eat as it pleased them

    Now I am really hungry!

It does not look like winter there, how cold does it typically get?

we are on Crete which is just about as far south as you can get in Europe

we had snow for 2 days 13th Feb about 6 years ago and that was the first snow for 80 years so its usually reasonably warm

it's not at all cold, around 15 degrees C outside in the shade at 10 am now and this is winter (winter being the first 3 weeks in February)

If we want snow we can drive 1 hour up to the mountains and then leave it all behind when we have had enough which suits me fine

One things about those Greeks, they know how to party. If you ever go to a greek party, you will not leave hungry, that is for sure.
