I find this thread funny. Everybody trying to make something out of Kier's tweets. Why not just wait until he feels like coming right out and saying what he is up to? Rumors and speculation just get you nowhere. Wait and see. When he's ready to say something, I'm sure he will. Until then, I think he's gonna have his hands full with a new baby around. :)

Haha, I've seen people do just that though. Kind of scary, actually, but it might come down to issues with money, community demands, etc. Some people prefer simple forums over anything like vB or IPB.

Look at Vanilla forums for an example of a package that people use even though it's not as far feature-packed as phpBB or SMF.

Frankly, Vanilla is pretty much the worst excuse for a forum ever created. Yes, I've seen people switch to worse software, usually because they're open source fanboys who think supporting some free project is going against the 'man'.

Or maybe because they think along the lines of:
Hey, if my opinion as a customer doesn't matter, I might as well stop paying good money for the privilege of not being relevant as a customer.

Still wouldn't justify Vanilla or phpBB when Invision 3 and other paid software (or even free with better features) are available.

Isn't phpBB one of the more feature rich free forum scripts?

Compared to MyBB and SMF I don't think so. Lots of languages by default sure, but not sure about how much else.

I've seen "pirated" copies of phpBB.

Many times people just don't know. They see it somewhere, and they get it. It usually isn't until later that they realize the world is much bigger than they thought.

Then again, you could use the same argument about why would someone get phpBB when you could get more robust software like vB and IPB, but even that could be flipped (and I've seen debates on phpBB's site where people knock IPB and vB and pretty much call people who buy them "stupid" for doing so when there's free alternatives).

Ugh, I wish things were simpler sometimes.

...or because they have different needs than you do.

Vanilla Vanilla - Free, Open-Source Forum Software has a great idea. Strip down all of the unneccessary stuff and then let the user build on things they enjoy. It'll keep it lightweight and simple with a focus on the conversations and content.

Not sure what is so horrible about that.
