While I disagree with MRGTB on a lot of stuff he said here, I really hate that saying.
If something isn't working right or someone does something wrong, we should speak up and say it. Maybe they're not realizing they're making a mistake or maybe they don't know it matters or how to fix it.
The say something nice or nothing at all approach may be a good idea when dealing with friends or family (to preserve the peace), but that's about the only thing I can think of. And even then - being honest is better and more important than being nice 99% of the time IMO.

I don't know why people have latched on to this idea.

It would make no sense whatsoever to uproot the entire UK team and move them to Los Angeles. The relocation costs to do so would be prohibitive, and the time and disruption is would cause would not be conducive to achieving the rapid development speed that Internet Brands want/wanted.

I've stated it before but it seems to have been forgotten, so here it is again: The UK development team were not asked to move to Los Angeles, nor could they have been given the wording of their contracts of employment.

May I remind everyone that Darren Gordon is a vBulletin developer who worked in the Pangbourne office with Mike, Scott, Ashley, James and me - and he is still employed by Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. at this point, so speculation about the UK team being disbanded because of a refusal to relocate is unfounded.

Thanks Kier. That thing about relocating the devs sound a bit wacky from the start and now we know.

    • Probably less communication to customers as to path of vB4 than IB has communicated.
    • Development pace much slower but less buggy than IB. Probably vB4 would still not have been released yet - at least 6+ months later than under IB. CMS probably wouldn't have made it either until later.
    • Probably would of seen incremental updates to 3.8.5-3.9.x before 4.x launch.

But definitely would trust Kier with a new forum software just for the fact he'd understand what we want more than IB does. Waves at Kier :)

Thanks for clarifying and I am sorry to speculate about other peoples private issues.

To the topic: I believe the most money is in creating a product for beginners. Beginner forums are the most forums in the market. However these forums often are build by admins who do not want to pay money. The big thing here is: Kier can sell a "Beginner Forum Software" which will improve shortly (to a "Forum software for professionals") to us experienced admins if we want to build another community. We admins know that good software costs money. That way we are his target group ("want to create another community?") and he can use his big reputation.

Well yes it might not make sense to you Kier because you had loads more info that we do on what happened.
But to outsiders it does look logicakl that if a company relocates 6,000 miles away maybe important staff don't want to follow.

You say it would make no sense to uproot UK staff but that isexacvtly what a lot of companies do these days. It's go or get out. And going doesn't necessarily include much by way of expenses, help with accommodation. Just if you want to hang on to your job, get moving.

We didn't know that one UK dev Darren Gordon is still working from the UK but now you've told us it clears up the point.

I too wish you well. It would be great if you do bring out a forum package. VB under your supervision was a good solid pack, with ace access permissions, lots of customisation possible, and a good support community.
I'd certainly be interested in anything you do for my forums on various sites.

But if you're developing something else exciting for 2010 which is not forum based, good luck with that too.

For the same reasons a lot of other people post negative comments about vBulletin all the time these days. Because there's really nothing positive to talk about with it.

But that aside, I see your point. And of late I'm thinking it's best I just step away from anything to do with vBulletin. Why even bother? I'm not interested in the product anymore. So yes, I agree with you Mike. I really should give it a rest for once, and just move on.

I have a question for Kier before I leave, as I can see he's browsing this forum as a write this message. Why don't you quash the rumours and say either way if there is some truth that your working on a new forum board project?

Shanj, maybe you should have used "I" and "me" instead of "us" and "we" a couple times in that post. ;)
Because I certainly did not assume that.

Whoever told you that Mikey sold you a lemon.
I don't bother to comment on rubbish. If I criticise something it's because I value it and I want it to get even better.

When I get incoming criticism on my projects I can sift the cranks, the nitpickers out, and then deal with the really useful stuff. If I explain why I'm not doing that bit right yet people are usually fine as long as it's clear I am going to work on it.

Criticism is a sign of a healthy active mind.
New Age sloppy white light blah nicey nicey is a sign of lonely brain cells.

However there's no reason why critique can't be packaged courteously. In fact it helps get you heard if that effort is made.

They weren't standing still. I thought we cleared this up somewhere (either in this thread or another one)?

And yet you continue to expend so much effort talking about it?

And yet you still can't answer the question. Simple Yes or No would have sufficed. Stop playing games Kier, your not being as clever as you might think you are.

Because if he makes a promise or states something for certain, and is unable to follow through for any reason, then the people who took his word and waited for his product get screwed over. It's like a false promise.

I get the feeling that he's hinting to us that he is doing something, but doesn't want us to bet on him 100%, for our own sake. Then you may ask, "why doesn't he keep it totally secretive and not drop any hints?" Well, I would assume that if he did that, people would have no choice but to go with vB 4 or purchase IP.Board licenses; then Kier's product would come out, and people would regret their new purchases. They'll say something like, "I wish you would have told us you were working on something; now I regret switching to IP.Board!"

So basically, he's hinting to us so those of us that believe in him can take a gamble and wait it out, while those who don't (you, for example) can move along to IP.Board or something and run the risk of regretting it after Kier's release.

That's my detailed theory on this matter. :D I hope I explained it in a way that makes some sort of sense.

By now (14 pages later) I would think Kier would have said "No" if he wasn't working on something ;). Just give him time, like with everything only time will tell.
