What would you say the average database size is for most medium to large boards?

And also, I know this depends GREATLY on the type of board you run, but what about disk space for your site if you run a medium to large forum?

I'm just looking for ranges here, not necessarily specifics.

    Thanks! :)

What do you consider a medium to large forum? Two of my forums are roughly the same size in terms of posts and members (AA and the Linnie Forum) but I'm not sure what sizes you have in mind.

I'd consider AA to be small-medium, but if you'd be willing to show your stats for either one of your forums, that'd be great! :)

    Large? Over 10,000 members?

    Medium...between 3000-10,000 members, I guess.

I can give you an estimate for my site which has just over 3,000 members and 126,000+ posts. The DB is around 80-100MB. Not really sure about disk space. Mind you I'm out of town at the moment so I could post more accurate figures when I get back home. :)

EDIT - I should also note attachments are stored in the file system and not the DB.

    depends really

    these days i'd say

    small forum = <400mb
    medium forum = 400mb to 1GB
    large forum = 1GB to 4GB
very large forum = > 4GB in size

I'm right on the verge of 3,000 members and I currently use just above 200MB. Actual disk usage for the account is about the same.

Wow! Perhaps my guess was a bit off? Do you store attachments in the file system or in the database and does your site have many posts? I'm keen to get back home today and find out just how big my DB actually is. :p

That figure actually doesn't include any attachments; they were lost in a conversion. 2/3 of the usage comes from posts, which our topics tend to be quite lengthy and wordy so that probably inflates things a bit. I do need to clear some logs, but even with those down to zero, you're talking 190MB range.

I don't really consider my board large - I've always thought it was medium-size. I guess I think about board size more in relation to how active they are, not really the database size. Given time, any board can become a 'large' board based on database size even if they only have 30 member online at a time. Anyway, we are at 1.2GB right now with attachments (11.5GB) in the file system. But, we've been around now for five years, so that is five years worth of posts.

You make a very good point, Lynne. I wasn't sure how to quantify it when I made my original post, but it really is the DB size that I'm curious about.

I'm curious now about directory size, too...

The particular directory I keep my live forums on is about 300M in size, but of course, that doesn't include the attachments which are stored above that folder and are about 11.5GB in size. I fill about 80GB of space on average on our web server with all my stuff (quite a few test configurations at the moment). I try to keep it at less than 90GB at any given time.

On my phpBB 3.0.5 board, I've got about 758K posts, 2000 members, with about 360-400 posts per day on average. A dump from mysqldump shows that the database is about 435MB, but because I've got my posts full-text indexed, CPanel shows my database is about 820MB.
