Nasty schmuck member brating other members

But on someone elses forum. Almost always online, constantly berating other members & staff in their posts, especially the newer members who are asking innocent questions.

Do I hit the report post button and type "Is this type of post really necessary?"

Would you want people reporting those types of things on your forum?

 

It would lead to talking to the administrators, saying, "nice post or thread you made at that forum. I also took a screenshot of it and your sig too." Then not replying back.

 

Absolutely I would want to know if a member felt another member was a butthead, I mean somewhat obnoxious.

We tell members "do not answer back in kind. Report the post and tell us specifically what bothered you. Then leave it to management." To encourage their reporting, all get a reply sooner or later telling them in very general terms if we took and action, and if not, why not. We don't give specifics about what we did for the privacy of all. The member reporting doesn't think their report went into a black hole, they know they did not waste their time.

Some expert claims every customer who complains represents at least 10 others who were cheesed off but didn't take the trouble. Buttheads, I mean obnoxious members, do 2 things - (1) risk annoying 'better' members to the point they cut back their participation, and (2) unintentionally set an example for other obnoxious members, I mean buttheads, to act the same way, thinking the forum mgmt is ok with it.

I really believe that the lowest level of behavior tolerated on a forum tends to spread, until it becomes a problem, if it's low enough. I believe, sadly, that that behavior is copied by other members of like mind - people who don't like it begin to withdraw - and there is a gradual creep of creeps. If that makes sense.

I not only saw that on my forum but on another forum as well. The other forum is discouraging to me because I am very interested in the topic but too many threads are useless snark/snipe-fests. It became a waste of time even to look in and see yet another thread filled with people reviling each other, pointlessly. I think mods have finally tried to step in, but although it is easy to let the moderating go, it is very hard to tighten it down when people expect to be allowed to do things no longer wanted.
