Wow, I'm surprised you don't get any spam. I must admit I've only seen one forum that allowed guests to post, but it was filled with spam and just trash posts in general. That's great if you got it to work for you. I personally stick to the tried and true must be registered to post. :)

Thanks. But my purpose is to encourage someone to provide their feedback. Much the same way AA has the forum for this, that allows the checkbox for Anonymous.

Other than that, I'm in agreement with the rest of you...Register your hiney, own up, yo.

As for no spam, idk. Not using any plugin. Just have reCaptcha there is all.

Now don't you go and test it....eemmm k? lol

I enable it for my Spotlight section (a section that each week focuses on Singer A vs Singer B or a themed music week - this week its 21st Century Divas) - but I choose to approve comments first.

We have guest-post-permission in a special questions-forum. Anyone can ask something regarding the common forum-content. It was meant to be a place for reducing obstacles to participate.
So far we had no spammers at all. On the other side only one guest screwed up her courage and asked a question of special interest. We could help her and she was grateful.

Another purpose of this section came out by experience: some users lost their passwords or hadnĀ“t access to the forum due to cookie-issues and were able to post "mayday" in this section. So this was really helpful too.

I've thought about allowing guest posting in certain support forums, and editing the results page to inserting a notification that they can receive faster support by signing up to the forum.

Another forum I was an administrator on did this, and worked out well, until we got spam bots coming in.

I don't grant posting permissions to guests. I've considered opening up the feedback/questions forum to guests, but I figure they can use the Contact Us form for such inquiries.

I agonized over this issue and came to the same conclusion. The registration system on most forums relies on several things which need to work such as emails getting to the people signing up.

I did see 1 forum that had an area where guests and registered users with unconfirmed registration emails could post, and it 'took something away' from the site and made it less professional. There was also the usual spam which they tried to keep off there but did miss some of them.

One of my resources in the the early days (phpbb) had a forum for guest posting. What I did was hide the area from view to registered members and only staff, admins and of course guest posting was possible. All other groups couldn't view and possibly didn't even know it was there if they regged before I implemented the guest forum.

I'm curious personally about something similar to this, but more on the lines of 'would it improve blog activity if the vBulletin blog posts were guest commentable?' Good idea? Bad idea?

Depends on what type of comments you would tolerate? Viagra ads might be put up.
