Many phpbb owners ask vbulletin owners what does it have that phpbb doesnt?, why do you choose vbulletin? Well now I am asking you the very same question.

Why did you choose to use phpbb over the other forum softwares?

Because it was free.... and I really like the admin & mod interfaces. Being a moderator on another vBulletin forum, the default admin control panel looks really ugly.

But, I might get a pre-owned vBulletin licence to see how it compares. :D

phpBB is a forum system, and you install it on a server with a domain name just like you've done with vBulletin on the forum in your profile link.

I use phpBB because it's free, has a lot of MODs and I think the styles for phpBB are very appealing.

MyBB is also free, and I make MyBB styles, so of course I find MyBB styles appealing.

Styles or the mods? The only real downside to phpBB is that the modifications require heavy php code edits, which also takes a lot of time.

Actually, I think that phpBB mod installations and code updates are an EXCELLENT way to dive into learning php and databases.

I used to use phpBB because it was free, and it did frustrate me at the time that it was so much work in install mods and updates. Now I see that that was a real benefit in the long run.

I chose to switch to vBulletin because I really like it. :p (and security issues)

I was asking for styles. I know where the mods are, and there are quite a bit.

I don`t have a choice, really. I want vBulletin or IPB, but can`t afford to pay for it if I don`t know how my site is gonna work out.

i use it cause........erm...........i dont know. our previous forums were on proboards but we decided that it was time to try something new cause one of ours got "hacked" (although shortly after we made our new forum we found out that it was in fact an admin that deleted everything cause she fell out with the other staff). we actually didnt know much about running forums, we hadnt ever started a forum before (we werent the owner of the last forum, just an admin and a global mod) and we did a google search for "free forum" and the one we happened to find was phpbb.

think its good though, never had a problem with it :)

First forum I used was a freeforums.org production.

It lasted about 2 daysa before I got fed-up with the lack of control I had.

So I looked in the footer, saw "phpBB", went to their website, downloaded a copy.

    Haven't looked back since.

I am very technical and learn quickly, so it wan't all that hard.

Added a WordPress installation as a portal, bridged the two, added more mods then I have fingers.

I would use vB, but it costs money.

When I orignally started my forum it was on PHPbb 3.0.0 and upgraded right along to 3.0.4. Mostly because the software was free I was on a tight budget and wanted to get started. Then as my site was starting to grow and I was looking for features like subscription mods and other things they just were not there and PHPbb 3.x was lacking what I needed so sad to say I moved on to VB4...

The main reason that i use PHPBB is because it is free and powerful. But i was disappointed when i upgraded to PHPBB3 because my site was moded and none of those modifications were available for the phpbb version 3. But fortunately now the moding community is growing :)
