Inactive Moderators

    What do you do or what would you do if one of your moderators becomes/became inactive on your forum? By inactive I mean they never signed in and contributed for over a month or for a long period of time.

    I wouldn't let it get that far out of hand, and no one else shouldn't either...

    You should let all staff members know that they should be active at all times unless they need a break off for some reason, such as they get busy with work/school and/or going on a trip some where or something, ect. ect.

    If a staff member becomes inactive, try to get in hold of the member, try to talk to the member to work out the issue, if you cannot get a hold of the member than demoting should be the next step...

    Let them know with a friendly email, if they dont come back within a week or so..de mod them.

    I leave them in there, but I go in and change their email address and pass so they have to contact me directly to get back in.

    Then, I email them.

    If I do not hear from them, I drop them back into the "valued member" group.

    But for me, it would be 5 days, not a month.

    Staff members are requested to give notice if they will know they will be not on for any period longer then a month. After 3-4 months we usually demote then if they not did give any notice.

    I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt and may end up going several months before even taking action. As someone else mentioned, it shouldn't be allowed to get that far out of hand in the first place.

    The only sort of inactivity I've experienced from a moderator is when one moderator only logged in every three to four days and made a few posts about every week or so. This went on for probably two or three months. Eventually, she PMed me letting me know that she has some life-changing issues going on (moving, new job, etc.) and that she would like to resign as it is not fair for the other moderators to have to pick up on her slack.

    I agreed and told her when/if she is ready to come back, her position will always be available to her. :)

    I tend to handle these situations on a case-by-case basis. ;)

    What many administrators do not realize is that like them, the members of their staff team do need to leave due to personal reasons from time to time. As such, inactivity should be expected at some point in time. Now... there also also those who choose to simply ignore their moderation duties and take long "vacations" for absolutely no reason whatsoever, without making the administration team aware of their absence beforehand. This is something that I will not tolerate. If I choose to promote a member of my community to a staff-level position, I expect them to a) fulfill their duties as expected and b) act maturely and responsibly. Simply leaving due to "boredom" is not an acceptable reason.

    If a member of my team feels the need to take some time off and/or leave due to a personal reason, then I of course will respect their wishes without hesitation.

    I also have an inactive moderator, but he is a real life friend. Should I still drop him(about 3 months of inactivity)? We still have lunch with each other from time to time. I don't like to bring up the forum because he'll might think the only reason I have lunch with him is to just start making him get online again.

    He's been inactive for three months?! That would warrant an automatic demotion from me.

    If a moderator (along with any other staff member) disappears for a lengthy period of time without making you aware of their situation, it's quite clear that they're either dealing with a personal issue or not interested in assisting the community. Next time you're with him, make an attempt to discuss this matter with him civilly.

    I love my staff, they're all volunteers, and I am in contact with them all daily, I became good friends with most, after I made them staff. If they haven't logged into the site for a while, they'll usually tell me why, if not, they'll get a poke from me on a various IM platform ;)
