When is a good time to sticky a thread published by a member?

What criteria do you follow, if any?

I generally won't 'stick' a thread created by a member unless it's extraordinarily informative in nature (i.e. one that stands out from the rest). I've also found that doing so can (and tends to) create tension and drama between members. I'm not exactly sure why, but it's something I've noticed - particularly with those who create similar threads (i.e. "why did you choose to stick his thread over mine?).

I stick a thread when it will be useful to the vast majority of members, and contains little editorializing. I generally tend to stick lists of resources as opposed to long posts or articles.

Never. If a thread needs to be stickied, it needs to be written by an admin, not a member. Stickies are something that should rarely, if ever, be done.

Admins are not knowledgeable in everything, sometimes the members have more information than us, insightful at that. So, I sticky a thread when a member has provided useful information regarding my niche. Not to mention, it's pretty much a recognition to the member for helping out the forums they attend. It can cause the users to get more proactive or defensive.

You're right, we can't be knowledgable in everything, but I've yet to see a member's post worth stickying.

That's not to say it won't ever happen, but, over the years, nothing so far. In fact, I've often criticized admins for being "sticky friendly", putting random crap up and then stickying posts just because they could.

Truthfully, there are some posts that are not 'worth', so to speak anyways, sticking. Depends on the niche as well. But just going to the 'never' extreme is a bit discouraging, plus it might misinterpret as you underminig the other member.

I sticky a topic if it's useful to a good amount of members. For example, a guide to a certain topic with plenty of useful information would be a good resource to sticky, regardless of who wrote it. I do however limit it to a certain amount of sticky topics per forum to stop it looking messy.

I only stick a thread by a member if it is informative.

I agree with everyone else. I also only stick a members topic when it is useful to the rest of the community.

This about sums it up for me as well. If I notice a forum is collecting a lot of stickies, I would remove those that are either 1) out-dated, 2) have the least views, or 3) the least important -- to make room for new stickies.

If I really found myself sticking a lot of threads, I would probably create a "Resource Box" forum (or sub-forum) and move very resourceful threads there. Almost comparable to an "Articles" forum, but not quite.

That is the best way to go to reduce the mount of stickies floating around - there was one site i went to where i went into one board and they had 10 stickies (at least) in there - i never went back there.

our stickies are all by staff, except for one by someone who used to be staff, and was at the point of stickying the thread. if a member did make a thread that was very informative, i would sticky it though.

i was a member of a forum and i got my thread stickied once cause i noticed that a lot of members were asking questions about how to do things on the forum, so when i was bored and the forum was quiet, i made a thread on how to do everything on the forum-avatars, signatures, pm's, email addy to contact the forums admin, link to the thread with the rules in....everything the members asked about. one of the mods stickied it cause it made his job easier. the only problem is, new members think that i am a mod, cause the staff usernames are the same colour (but they have moderator or admin written under their name, and a rank image saying that they are staff) and that i have a higher post count than the admin.
