Moving from Shared to VPS?

For the same price I pay now for shared hosting, I can pay the same price and move to a VPS.

For a small site, would that kind of VPS be perfect? It comes with no control panels since cPanel requires 256MB of RAM, so another question would be how easy would it be for me to edit my site without have cPanel. I know little to nothing about Linux. Should I stick with shared hosting (There are 114 sites on the same server as me) or move to that VPS.

 

These days I'd skip VPSes entirely and go shared -> Semi-dedicated -> Dedicated instead.

VPSes add an entirely new layer of headaches, on top of your current inexperience with *nix.

 

Would you consider bumping up your spending limit? It'd be beneficial for you to move to a more controllable environment (such as a VPS), but not with the specifications mentioned above.

 

128MB of RAM isn't very much. Are you experiencing slowness with your current host? Have the warned you about resource usage or suspended your site during busy hours? Are you getting a ton of Database errors? If you answered no to these, then there really isn't a reason to upgrade at all.

If you are having troubles with your current host, it maybe your host (Depending on who you host with) or it could be time to move to an actual VPS. You'll definitely need one with a control panel if you don't have any linux experience, and you'll need to get it managed as well so be sure you get a managed VPS.

128 megs of ramm is nothing these days. In most cases that is not enough to boot the operating system, such less run a webserver, DNS, email server,,,,,.

If your looking at a VPS, go with at least 512, with more like 768 more like it.

 

The 128mg and the no cPanel would scare me away.

Seems there's a reason it's cheap.

Out of curiosity, Ryan, what sort of specifications does your current hosting plan consist of?

Try moving to a better shared hosting.

I recommend ace-host.net. I believe they limit it to 29 per server? 27? Something around that.

That RAM on that VPS would keep me away.

 

Go to the Future Hosting website and look over their VPS plans. Start with one that has cpanel and about 512 megs of memory.

That should get you going.

 

If your running multiple sites and Cpanel 512MB is really a minimum for a VPS to work well. I upped mine a while back to 1GB Ram and it's much better.

If you go for unmanaged though, even with cpanel it's a steep learning curve !

 

Try Knownhost. I'm on their vps 3 plan, and it's more than enough for my 3 sites.
