So if you were going to install vB today, aside from things like entering the name of the site, what are the first configuration changes you would make?

Do you have sort of a checklist of items that would typically cover on a new install?

    Enable ReCaptcha
Set forum width to about 1000 and install a custom header. That buys some time to look for a custom theme.

    Install modifications:
One touch spam ban and clean up
    Automatic embedding media modification
    Install a better lightbox modification

Insert the google analytics code into the footer
Create a forum information section and a rules thread

its important to enable email verification and also you have to configure the permissions of custom groups like avatar size, signature permissions, pm storage and the number of pms the member can send at a time ..and install some basic modifications like top stats..etc

Well I just started a new project, so I have it all fresh on my mind. Here is what I have done so far, in order of occurrence:

    • Install vB
    • Set options
    • Set up basic forum structure (announcements, new member intros, admin forum)
    • Find and set up new theme/skin
    • Add custom homepage/index
    • Set up .htaccess redirect (non-WWW to WWW); set up Google Analytics; set up Google Webmaster Tools
    To-do, starting tomorrow:

    • Install basic necessity hacks/mods
    • Tweak the skin (add custom logo, etc.)
    • Establish Community Rules
    • [... so much more ...]
I'll update this thread as I progress. :)

I configure each and every setting via the administrative interface. I've done so for the past three years - it's a must to take care of this before doing anything else.

That is the first thing I do, sit and go through all of vbulletin options, once theyre tweaked the way I like them I begin adding forums, then start working on the styles.

I try to stay away from too many ads in the beginning and focus on content until the members and visitors numbers are at decent levels.
