So people have been asking for something that would allow users to log in from multiple services. While not an official feature of vBulletin at this time, Internet Brands - Auto Division has been working on a product that they call vBulletin Nexus. It allows login from Facebook, Google, OpenID, and AIM. It will also publish to your Facebook wall. They provided a test installation here: vB Nexus The product will be made available to all vBulletin customers and should be a simple product install when completed. If you're already a vBulletin customer you can read about it here: vBulletin Community Forum
Thanks for the Demo wayne, I was browsing the vB forums and saw a IBx member with that in his signature and wondered if there was a demo or if it was official.
Can you shut off the question that pops up with a post that asks if you want to publish to facebook when you use a facebook login?
Ok, I tried it out and it's interesting and all that. I certainly don't want to bring up the Facebook is trying to take over the world argument, some like the integration, some see it as a threat. Both arguments are understandable. The issues I have: -No Email capability to members registering from outside sources. - Inherent mistrust of IB, is there anything in this hack that phones home and shares any data with IB about your users that have registered using this tool. There are a few flaws still, but hey, it's alpha software. One other item that troubles me. If I was to go onto vB.com or vB.org and announce alpha software with the place for the community to test, offer feedback and report bugs I'd be run out of town. I guess when you own the sandbox....
If this is your worry than you shouldn't be using vBulletin. It phones home everytime you access the Admin CP. You shouldn't be using Google Adsense because Google has publicly stated that there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet. However I doubt this addon has any phone homes and it will be visual source anyway so one would quickly be found. People beg, cry and demand new functionality. When functionality is developed, all they can do is complain about the creator of the software. Quite frankly, we need more collaboration about upcoming projects so I don't necessarily agree with these rules. I have always thought that vBulletin.org should provide a mechanism for this collaboration as well as the advertisement of commercial addons and service providers. However the powers that be there don't agree. Hopefully that will change in the future.
We do have some things going on over at vb.org that will change the place up a bit. I dont' think I can really go into it, but I do know that you will be seeing some changes in the future.
Just to be clear, the [current] powers that be didnt actually make that rule, its years old and I believe was something to do with vbseo. Its not exactly been a major talking point in the last three years, until vbnexus highlighted it. I think it will be reviewed shortly.
Yes, but I knew that before I made my purchase. My understanding and please correct me if I am wrong is that vB only reports that it is a real valid paid for version. I have no issue with that. As part of a group involved in development of addons for fun and profit we have found we need to create a "Lite" version of a product we sell to give away on vB.org in order to really get people to notice the full featured paid for version and hope they visit our site to see the other products we offer. Granted that is a just a small part of a entire marketing scheme. However, if vB.org did offer a true central location where dev's could offer paid versions as well as free I think we'd see a bit more creativity. Currently there is no real effictive method call attention to yourself. The space is very fragmented, heck, I'm on 5 different admin forums and I know there are lots more out there. But, I still look to vB.org to a center. Change can be good, I'd like to see vB.org be a bit more open.
I might try this on my forum when it comes out, it seems like having integration for multiple login systems would be a lot better than merely using the current Facebook connect modification.
You would have to ask the developers but if you banned their email address, than they shouldn't be able to login. Of course they can get a new email address. But they can do that with standard logins as well.
Apparently, vB Nexus has been released now: vB Nexus, Facebook & Google multiple login integration - vBulletin.org Forum How is it? Anyone running it on their forums?
I downloaded it but haven't implemented it. I want to use smaller graphical icons and my style is customized enough that the code won't be auto-inserted into the templates.
