Do you pay the extra fee to keep your domain name registration information private, or do you figure few of your members would know how to use whois?

Isn't private registration free with Namecheap? That has been my experience on more than one occasion.

I use it on all my domains.

I used to use godaddy and pay the extra money till I found out about namecheaps free year haha plus that they are so much easier to use!

I think its free for the first year, and then you have to renew the whois protection. Because I get these emails from namecheap saying the whois protection is expiring and to renew it soon.

It all depends on the project. I tend to keep my contact details private, but sometimes keep them publicly viewable via a WHOIS service.

If I thought the site was likely to garner hate mail, I'd keep the details private.

That's one reason for doing so. Imagine the frustration and stress involved with receiving such e-mail... ugh.

Now that I've migrated all of my in-use domains to Namecheap, I use the WhoisGuard service since it's so cheap through Namecheap.

I'm making the transition over to them as well, Nick (already have for some projects). Their private registration service is much easier to manage when compared to GoDaddy's provider (I'm drawing a blank in regards to the name).

My main forum domain is private but I can't recall all the misc .Net or .Orgs etc.

I'm personally quite fond of the way in which the private registration is integrated within the interface (as opposed to managing an individual account with another provider). Keeps things organized.
