When Googling for your main keywords do you find there are many forums out there that are simply relics on the internet that just get in your way of success?

When I Google for our main keywords there is a forum in particular which has excellent positioning and to be honest based upon its content doesnt seem worth being there. It is unmaintained and has hardly any posts or threads either, it is right above us in the SE's, why wont it move damn that thing

Google reportedly gives more weight to sites that have been around a long time, or domain names registered for a while (like five years). This seems to indicate to them that you're reputable.

Thats the thing people will set up and never really return and just leave their forum on their hosting and pay for it for years expecting for it to grow itself. I honestly think these forums dont deserve their positioning especially when they have little content.

Fair enough Google need to keep an eye out for the scammers who set up and rip people off and then close down and not give so much importance to the sites registered for say a year only, but they should make sure that sites get positioning they deserve :)

There are 2 sites that are a little thorn, but not a major one. My main forum ranks #1 is several keywords and is improving in others. So in some searches, my forum ranks better then those other sites. and in other searches, my forum ranks right next to then.

In some keyword searches I hit an old forum which has been closed for years ahead of mine. It ticks me off. That I feel I have to compete against the dead...

Rofl there is plenty of them out there, search almost any word with forums after it and you will see loads of those damn things.

Is there any way to effectively compete against these sites? Do you have to wait until you're as old and bloated as they are?

Yeah, and it's a shame. The #1 result for my keyword/phrase is a puny static website that isn't updated, and is totally outdated. Apparently it's been around for a long time though.

Google loves my site (based on my SERPs) so hopefully I will surpass this site when my domain has been around for a while. :)
