Have you ever been a member of a forum you have found really unfriendly or just browsed one and decided not to join because of its unfriendly atmosphere, share your experiences with everyone :)

I have been a member of a fairly unfriendly forum where they greet newcomers with swearing on a daily basis, it is actually destroying their forum and new members tend to leave after only 1 or two posts. unless they decide to fit in with that crowd.

Name and shame the most unfriendly of forums :)

Yes, it is indeed owned and operated by a member of this community.

I'm not going to name the one I'm thinking about...

Newbs are not pleasantly welcomed there, an elite group of members showcase theirselves as if they are the gods of that forum, all kinds of swearing is allowed, many threads get locked for no reason

    Sherdog Mixed Martial Arts Forums

It's known around the MMA community as having some of the worst members and the mods ban good members for no reason and don't ban the trolls.

It's a shame too because it's the biggest MMA website and they have some good articles on there sometimes.

I visited a forum for law students once that was mostly filled with miserable, nasty people. Stayed long enough to PM the owner about an issue and got the hell out of there.

I joined an SEO forum a few weeks ago, and got a red reputation from a senior member on my 3rd post. The guy had like 12,000 post. And if you disagreed with him, he would give new members negative reps.

    I did not go back.

Yes indeed, It's a pity you can't say that on vbulletin.org anymore paul. I put a stop to that. That's okay though, times a great healer.

In the umpiring niche there use to be this one, McGriffs, which was the nastiest place with the biggest flame wars you've ever imagined. The site is closed now, but still somehow ranks high with Google????

I'd be interested in hearing what experience(s) you have had with "unfriendly" discussion communities. Care to share?

There is a forum that isn't unfriendly to newcomers ... but if a couple of topics are mentioned, the same members go bananas against it and trash the thread. Same tired rants and snide/snarky comments. Nothing can be said in opposition to their diatribes without them ripping up the post.

Newbies have an unfortunate tendency to mention the sensitive topics, having no idea. Older members who don't go bananas immediately start posting lines from "she'll be coming round the mountain ... " one after the other, as an inside joke to the coming train wreck. The newbies have no idea what it is about ... until ...

Newbies who stumble into this trap, either through posting or just reading, have a tendency to loose respect for the opinions likely to be received there, and back off participation. I know I have.
