How do you deal with staff members who decide that resigning publicly (rather than contacting you privately) is the appropriate action to take? If you've had to deal with such a situation, have you found that these members do this in a "soft" manner, or do they become heated?
I have never had any experience in this but if any staff member on my communitys would post an thread in public about resigning then I would be very angry and probobly loose all respect for him. I think that he atleast should contact me before and then when I have replied to him, he can post an thread in public to let everyone know.
If I didn't want to delete the post entirely, I would reply saying I was surprised and saddened by the announcement. Depending on the amount of vitriol in their post I would probably wish them well but say something about "I wish you had talked to me about this".
I've also had these members post a resignation publicly, and then leave - no return visits whatsoever. I find this to be a bit aggravating - if you're going to take the time to post a resignation publicly, the least you could do is stick around to explain yourself. There's bound to be discussion among other members if such a post was made.
Never had a staff member resign publicly, but had a few members throw their toys out the pram via a thread. Generally we just close the thread.
Wow Chris, I actually had a wide-eyed look on my face as I read that thread title! I thought you were the one resigning! LOL I've never had this happen, but I would probably do what Paul did and just close the thread and depending on how integral a part of your forum they are, I might address it with a "good luck" thread or something.
Never had a staff member resign publicly without giving me some form of notice and a reason. I think it works bad in two ways. One is it ruins their reputation and the other is that it could ruin the community they use to feel a part of.
It's not something I would want to happen, to be honest. I would rather them at least tell me about it before the announcement is made. It's just a weird situation to find out the news at the exact same time as your members and have to react to it with them.
Rather than removing their privileges immediately, I'll still make an attempt to contact the individual privately. I'd rather "work out" the situation (so to speak) as opposed to making a drastic move without hesitation.
xD Pisoga had 4 staff members resign at the same time, I wasn't admin at the time, but I was the one that had to remove their powers because shortly after that, Kuri went ballistic.
He's the evil Ex-Admin that everyone wanted out, and when he did leave and left me in charge, he demoded all the mods from the chat and I had to beg the creator of the flash chat to make my account the admin account.
