Never explored the feature of channels in Adsense, because I couldn't understand what the benefits were. I believe there's still no documentation for it in my language. After some good research, I think I understand it.

468*60 banner on top with channel "top"
728*60 banner on footer with channel "footer"

Within Adsense you can check your income with channel "top" en channel "footer". Probably more income with channel "top".

    That's how it works, right?

That's pretty much it Demo. Channels work as follows. As much as you only need a single site to be accepted by Adsense, once accepted you can add Adsense to more sites than just the one you were accepted with.

Channels are Adsense's way of tracking the performance of single ad units. You can have multiple channels for different sites and further channels for ad units within that site.

Here at AdminAddict, we have a top banner (not Adsense, but for examples purpose consider it an Adsense unit). AA will set up a channel with a distinctive name, in the case of this example we'll use "AA Top Banner". AA also has another Adsense unit on the formhome sidebar named "AA forumhome sidebar". It is almost certainly the case that one unit will perform better than the other, that's a given on any forum.

Seperating the two channels, "AA Top Banner" and "AA Forumhome Sidebar", allows AA to see what is performing well and what needs optimzing for better gain. Not only does it allow for a better insight on particular zones, but the AA prefix also determines what Adsense revenue (assuming you have multiple sites) is actually coming from AA.

You can choose to view custom reports on multiple channels. At the end of the month (or for any chosen time frame), you can build a custom report showing the combined data from both "AA Top Banner" and "AA Forumhome Sidebar" to see overall how well AA is performing with Adsense.

I hope this small insight helps with your question.

    I just made this channel:
Then I edited my ad and added the channel "top". This is all I had to do?

That's right; AdSense Setup > Manage Ads > Edit Ad Settings > Add your channel at the bottom

Now your ad unit will collect the data under a channel name and display it in your Reports. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away. I hope I've helped you.

Dominic pretty much shared most of what there is to know about channels. :P

On my Linnie Forum, we have several Google AdSense ads and I use a different channel for each advertisement. It makes it much easier to observe and compare each unit's performance.

I started off using only URL channels and now I'm realizing I need to set up channels for everything. I have several sites that have add-ons like link directories and I need to set up separate channels for each of the ads there too.
