Moving Threads

When you move an thread that is in the wrong place to you leave any redirection from the old forum? Permanent och temporary? Or do you not leave any redirection?
Why do you choose to do that and what does your staff members do?

 

I like to use a temporary redirect, usually only a day. That gives people long enough to see it but doesn't clutter up the place.

 

7 days for a redirect and have an automated process to send the user a PM letting them know where it was moved.

 

It depends on how long ago it was posted and if the user is online. If the thread was newly created only moments ago, I will redirect it with 1 hour expiration.

If I don't catch it until several hours after they post it, and they aren't online anymore, I will move it with a day or two redirect. I like to give them enough time to see the redirect, but I don't want it to sit there for a long time.

 

What automated process is it, gnatster? Does it also notify users who posted replies?

I used to leave no redirect at all, then I switched to permeant redirects for no real reason. We keep a timed one on AA, depending on when we moved it and when it was made (the stuff Nick said).

 

If it's blatantly in the wrong spot, I'll move it with no redirect. If it just looked like someone didn't know quite where to post it, I'll move it with a 2-day redirect.

I don't think I've ever left a redirect of any kind, to be honest - it's one of my habits. When I move a thread, I don't want any trace of it to be left in its place of origin.

 

I like to have fun with moderators that do not leave a redirect. I'll start a thread in the site information section, or the contact the staff section and say something like "hey you noob mods, learn how to leave a redirect. My thread was moved and now I dont know where its at"

One of the moderators will usually find the thread for me and post a link - "here it is <link>.

Then I will usually post something like - "yall dont know how to leave an expiring redirect?" - if the forum software is vbulletin that is. Then explain how I have to go use the search feature to find my thread. And how much trouble the noob moderator caused me. I only do this if I have been a member of the forum for a long time.

What I "really" like to do, if the forum is smaller then mine, I will post my forum stats and say "I run a forum with X number of post and I always leave a redirect." Its kinda like rubbing their nose in their own poop.

That usually puts the moderators on the defensive.

Before its over, they will be leaving redirect on the next move.

Personally, I leave a 2 day - 1 week expiring redirect.
