    Hey Nick,

How do you do thread and forum specific ad locations?

I do forum specific by using a design that has an advert specific to the said sponsor and then apply that to the forum they sponsor. Doing it in VB required very little effort as you can always allow it to apply its parent design changes.

    Though thread-specific I can't figure out, and haven't found a mod' for.

Here's a general theory type suggestion.

Almost all the forums I've seen in the webmaster niche and beyond operate on what we could call the "cocktail party" model. That is, anybody can join and say pretty much anything, so long as it's not spam or destructive to the community.

This "cocktail party" publishing model is obviously useful and popular, and I'm not suggesting any changes to it.

But, because this style of forum management is almost universal, it does create an opportunity for some forums to distinguish themselves, do something somewhat unique, and maybe create a name for themselves in a very crowded marketplace.

An alternative forum management style might be called the "letter to the editor" model. In this setup, anybody can join and submit anything they wish to share. All submissions are sent first to a moderator for review and approval, before publication.

This model would obviously eliminate all spam etc, and would probably result in a lower number of higher quality posts, which could translate in to a more efficient and rewarding reading experience.

In the world of forums, this may sound like a radical proposal, and may generate a variety of complaints from forum users and mods who are used to doing things the normal way.

Outside the world of forums, this "letter to the editor" model is pretty much the standard used by all successful media outlets.

You know, none of us would subscribe to a print magazine that published every article anybody submitted. In most circumstances we expect, rather demand, that an editor make judgments about what content is worth our time and what isn't.

Being new here, I have no idea whether this concept would be interesting or useful to this community. Thus I hope you'll see this post as just general food for thought, rather than as a suggestion of what should happen on this site.

There appear to be a great number of webmaster forums available, and they all seem to work pretty much the same way. Perhaps there's an opportunity for those willing to do things a bit differently?

I would like to see a moderator show up and start cleaning up the spamming mess.

Where can I post about it then? Without having a section for it yet.
