Does anyone here use BBPress as their forum? This is from the makers of WordPress and powers the forums at WordPress.org. Its not as feature rich as some of the software applications but it integrates with WordPress well and is free so...

I was just curious if anyone used it and what plugins they recommended.

I've never used it to power a forum over mine however I've been an end user of some bbpress forums and as much as I find it lacking some features I really like as an end user I really like the simplicity of it.

I've played around with a few test installs and while I like the simplicity of it, it's just not as robust as I like my forum's to be however I'd definitely use it as an addon to one of my WP powered blogs just because it integrates so well.

I think BBPress is very ugly so no I don't use it. Why use it when you have vBulletin :)

bbPress is actually quite nice - and an excellent (simple) alternative to the more popular forum scripts (i.e. MyBB).

While some may find it to be visually ugly, I find it to be quite appealing. We're so used to using forum scripts that are packed with features and designed to perfection that we have a difficult time accepting those that are composed of a lesser amount of features and a not-so-complicated interface. While inline moderation may be a necessary feature (or group of features) for some, it's most certainly not necessary in itself. bbPress is all about simplicity and ease of use - it's a script that can easily be installed, easily be configured, and easily be managed.

In regards to the plug-ins, I'm actually not too familiar with what's available.

Well ugly is in the eye of the beholder. The example sites of Wordpress.org and BBPress.org are visually minimalist. They don't have a lot of extras. All of Auttomatic's websites are like that. But if you look at some of their staff's sites, you can find them to be visually explosive like Matt Mullenweg — aka Photo Matt — on WordPress, Web, Jazz, Life, and Photography.

The problem with vBulletin is that it presents too much and can overly complicate things. The focus of the site will remain to be the bi-monthly magazine issues and interim articles. Users can already comment on these things within Wordpress. They can already register, take tests, and build their Eco profile within Wordpress. It is very difficult to integrate Wordpress into larger forum systems and keep Wordpress as the focus for registration.

There is nothing wrong with these larger forum systems and I am sure they fill the needs of the people that use them. However sometimes, a simpler solution is needed.

Maybe I can come up with of plugins for additional features and post it here.

I've actually been pondering over the idea of using bbPress for a project of mine. Coincidentally, it would most likely be used for a photography-related website.

Ah, excellent! It's something that I've wanted to do for a while now, but I haven't gotten around to doing so. :)

You would think a minimalist design a la PunBB or Vanilla would come with a commiserate speed improvement. It outruns Joomla, that's about it. It comes with the same kwality koding that wordpress is built upon - that is to say, make sure Suhosin has your back at a minimum.

In searching for a 'free' forum solution for my WordPress sites that I'm starting to have created, I was looking at BBPress.

I might have to try it because it looks like there are already some plugins created for it to integrate properly with WordPress.

Anyone else have feedback about BBPress?

I don't even know what it does. Does anyone know of a web site using it a Word Press together?

    Found an example!

FMB, of course you wouldn't like it....you're all about color and life! :D

I just want something that I can communicate with folks on that can be fully integrated with WordPress, yet fully secure without any issues. So, I'm looking around ;)

This could work just fine if you're only looking for something to talk to your WP users with and that integrates fully with your WP.

Once I have my blog ready to go (in about a week or so), then I'll want to try and integrate the forums into it. So, the big piece is having the theme done for the bbPress match the custom theme being done for my WordPress. But, maybe I can get there as I see a couple of help topics/threads about bb and WP integration already :D

Yes! I am vivid and colorful! But colors make this bland world fun! Apart from the loonies.

To be honest, BBpress confuses me... x.x I tried it once and never got to make a forum since I was confused.
