So what's wrong with "necroposting"?

I agree here, in fact our rules are such that if the post is simply asking for updates then it constitutes a necropost. We advise them in that case to send a PM to the thread author instead. We allow necros if it adds truly relevant information, but when your forum consists of mostly support and development threads - necroposting becomes more of an issue when really old threads are brought to the top messing up the chronalogical order of things.

I noticed! You've brought up so many older threads. :P

It's a good thing! There are many new members since those discussions originally took place, so it gives the new ones a chance to see some different threads.

    Keep on goin'! :D

I have a small forum. Also, I don't attract people who are interested in promoting their website. That said, I think "necroposting" takes on a new light when applied to my forum.

I bring back old topics every now and then when I have a new point to make that I think will interest members, and when I know there are several new members who are likely to have something to add, too.

Finally, it's funny this topic should come up, as I got a private message from one of my members yesterday asking for my policy on bringing back old topics. My exchange with her encouraged me to add a new entry to my FAQ/NSFAQ topic:

    This.

An update to an ongoing chronological event is a good thing (I need to post one now, in fact.) But a new version of that event needs a new thread - don't post about this year's convention in the dead thread for last year's convention.

We usually don't intervene, but we had one new over-amped 13 yo member who apparently had nothing else to do when school was out for the summer. She must have added meaningless comments to a dozen threads that had not had a post in 3-5 years. We put a stop to that.

I'm glad this thread came back up, I missed it the first time. It's interesting to know what other forums do about this. I've seen one or two that closed old threads automatically, but I believe that discourages some additional worthwhile posting. People don't always start a new thread about an old thread, if they can't post in the old thread.

I have nothing against necroposting unless it has NOTHING to do with the OP.
