Ever had one longstanding member demand you get rid of another and threaten to leave if you didn't? How did you resolve it?

I have never had this situation on any of my sites but if I would have I would say that he can leave. Unless the other members is breaking rules over and over again then I would ban him.

Yes, on my anime forum [Pisoga] there was a mod who wanted me to change the rules and get rid of another mod. In my opinion, if the person wants to go, the buh-byes, there is no reason for you to threaten me. When a person is on a staff team that I chose/users chose, they have to work along, or not work at all. In the end, I demodded the person since he wasn't willing to cooperate and I told him that threatening me like that wasn't the way to go. After that I found a substitute.

I had a Mod do this. We have a couple of General Discussion forums and we basically allow users to express any opinion they want. Of course, some of them try to be rather outrageous just to see what kind of reaction they get. I have one Moderator for those forums and have told all the other Mods to leave those forums alone (they are all Super Mods, so they *can* mod in there but I have told them not to). One of my Mods took offense to one user who posts in those forums and banned him because of what he was posting. I told him No, leave the forum alone, that isn't yours to Moderate. He wouldn't leave it alone and said he was gonna leave if we allowed that guy to continue posting. I was sorry to see him go, but I wasn't gonna change our open posting policy just for him.

If the other person isn't breaking the rules or trolling then not much you can do about it.

The person making the complaint can put the person on ignore. If that doesn't work than thank them for their contributions and wish them luck.

Pretty much exactly what I'd do in such a situation.

I have actually had this happen. The forum was very close and some drama was brewing within the community. It basically turned into a "get rid of them or I'm out" situation. It ended in the person giving up and rarely visiting the forum anymore, mainly just to lurk.

If I got a message from Mary:
Either Jane goes or I go!

It might be entertaining to put up a thread stating that "Mary wants Jane to go" who should we keep? and put up a poll. :D

This situation has happened a few times for me. Mary may appear to be a good person and possibly quite popular, but no truly good or reasonable person would ever make such a request. If Mary has any position of power (mod, admin. supermod, real life acquaintance) remove that power and have less to do with that person.

I have had users complain about certain moderators that they have to deal with in a particular forum. Basically a conflict in personalities between a moderator and a user. So, I've asked that the moderators in that forum not get personal with the user and instead ask one of the other moderators to deal with the user. That seems to work out.

I've never had this happen yet. If it did, I don't think I'd concern myself too much with the whole ordeal. I'd check it out to ensure there aren't any rules being broken, no personal harassment, etc. and if it's all clear, I'll let them figure it out amongst themselves (so long as it doesn't disrupt the harmony of the forum).

I always get these threats, but they never actually happen.

When I had All Star Gaming Pro, in the Debate forum, two people got into a heated debate. It was between a moderator and another moderator. The super moderator was basically overpowering the other moderator within the debate. The moderator PMed me complaining about the moderator... I told her that you got yourself into the debate, find your way out. The moderator stopped visiting the forum and two weeks later sent me her resignation note.

In a nutshell, yes, it has happened. I solved the problem by telling the moderator to solve his own problems. He didn't like my answer so took a break and never returned.

People like that usually return eventually, whether you want them to or not...

Ban the member that is trying to strong arm you. Nobody pushes me around on my own site.

    Exactly.

It may not be right away, but within a certain time, they do, correct.

It sometimes depends on the situation, but oftentimes my general thought on the matter is "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." Divisive individuals are, as a rule, not good community material.

Never had this happen. But if it ever does, my thoughts are this: If the other person hasn't done anything wrong, then just let the person making the demands leave. If they try to apply too much force, I'd ban them. :)

I've actually had this happen to me once before. I just told the member that he needs to resolve his problems with the other member, and they did :P

I had this issue where two members were saying either he goes or I go - seem I was in a bad mood that day I decided they could both go!

You know, that is actually sometimes the better move to make. If both of these members are causing a fuss publicly and effecting the way in which your other members interact with each other, it may be necessary.

Let the member know how much you value her as a member of the community and that you'd be very disappointed to see her leave. As for managing the other member, it depends on how well he is obeying the forum rules and number of complaints against him.

    Handle with care . . . :)
