I doubt I will ever give a moderator back end access any way, so I have no worries.

    Thanks though.

One mod has the phone #, email & account # for server support. She has contacted support a couple of times when the forum took a dive and I couldn't be reached immediately.

No one else has the url or login information for the server stuff.

Although I trust her implicitly, she is not knowledgeable in this area, and there are too many things that can be accidentally & permanently messed up. Same goes for some of the more esoteric functions in the admin panel - pretty much no one else has access. If there is a slip-up that affects the forum it will be mine.

If I were to be hit by a truck (as they say) frankly the server and admin panel are a bit of a concern. I have no real succession plan in such an event. It's all single-threaded through me. I do hate to think the forum would come to a gradual pause, or have to be started over on another new forum because there was no way to pass on the back-end knowledge.

There are members who could step in and handle it all ... but I don't have a way to pass on the access information in the event I'm not available and compos mentis. Not to mention the domain ownership, etc. I've thought about this but haven't done a good job of putting the information where a relative could step in and pass the info on.

I self manage my own servers 100%. I don't need or want anyone in my system.

Ditto on that. I'm just a paranoid person when it comes to something like a server.

On vb.org its all handled by Jelsoft (actually, its prob IB now).

Cable Forum has one other admin who can do any server work, and a second one who has limited knowledge. This is generally ok, tho last August, the post table developed issues, and both I and the other server expert were away, the forum was taken offline for about 36 hours until I returned and restored the post table.

The trouble is that if you don't delegate you can never travel -- or sleep.

    Scalable success requires delegation.

Quite true, Will - in the past, I have neglected the delegation of tasks and, because of this, had a variety of what seemed like "endless" days.

Because of internet problems, I had to give one of my moderators access to my server, they didn't know anything about it, but I successfully taught them how to upload to the FTP, upgrade and install a forum.

Just out of sheer curiosity, how long did it take you to effectively "show them the ropes"? :)

To be honest, for them to completely know the process of:

    • How to start the FTP pannel
    • Where/how to upload the forum and contents to the right places
    • Installing the forum
    • Uploading image files
    • Uploading plugins that included core admin files and Language files
    • How to upgrade the forum[Since we had MyBB 1.4.6 and we had two other upgrades made by him, by the upgrade for 1.4.8 he did it all himself]
    • How to create new root directories
I'd say about 6-7 hours. We were working on the forum together and he helped me through the whole process. He "thanks" me for opening a whole "new world" for him. I am teaching him PHP [the little I know] and CSS design[the little I know], helping him in photoshop and such.
