Partner or Solo

Working with a partner truly is (or can be - it has for me) a tremendously wonderful experience. Sharing the work load is one thing, but brainstorming new ideas and actually putting them into play with an additional team member is rewarding.

 

Chris...that's absolutely a great point. The brainstorming and bouncing of ideas off of each other can be a VERY powerful thing! I've had a few folks that I nearly partnered up on some projects on (unfortunately, they were not able to participate due to lack of time and other issues) and it we would bounce ideas off of each other even just on IM and came up with stuff that was GOLD, I tell ya!

I like having a partner or two...

I like the fact that there's more people to contribute to ideas, help with members and if something ever happens to the other administrator, God for bid, there's another person that can be there to make sure everything is running smoothly within the site.

 

It's always great to have an additional administrator or two that you trust. Peace of mind at its finest.

I usually start solo. I will add someone later if needed. Only once I started from the very beginning with another person. That site didn't last too long though.

 

I really like both for certain reasons.

I like having a partner (or partners) because you have more opinions on what goes on the site and everything.

I like going solo because then I don't have to listen to anyone else and I get to run everything.

 

Hmm, a differing opinion here. I'd be interested in hearing more about this experience. Was there something in particular that caused the project to fail? Would you say that the issue could have been avoidable if there was only one administrator?

 

We both just lost interest. It was one of those things that was like "oh what a great idea" only to realize we really didn't have it in us to talk about it so much.

With that said, I'm not against starting with other people. I'd love to have another set of hands to help in the beginning. I just never find the people, or sometimes bother to look for them. :p

 

Interestingly enough, I've been pondering over the idea of starting a solo project - I've been partnering with others for the majority of my web development career and it could be nice to change things up for a bit.

 

For me, solo is the way to go. If I had to ask someone about a direction for my sites, I feel that some of the creative content might not be there like it is today.

Ideas on the other hand, that is something that I need plenty of. But if I want to go a certain direction on my sites, I do not want to have to consult with anyone.

 

That is pretty much the same way that I feel about not having an co-owner of my sites.

 

Another reason some people like solo is because when money is involved, problems arise.

And fighting over money is no good.

 

Wow, you literally just stated my opinion/situation exactly. This very site, AA, was my first time starting with a partner. It seemed great but it didn't last very long and we both lost interest. It took a while for Nick to come along, but Nick is the best thing to have happened to AA.

Oddly enough, I like working entirely by myself on my own test forum. When I have something I really like I will get the domain and license and make it. Then I'll start letting it go public, all still solo. This is what I did with my oldest and largest board at least - and for the three years it was up I was still the only admin with a great moderator team to talk to and one mod that eventually got some admin power at the end.

And again.

And make sure you each can login to control the domain, cPanel, software script, FTP, etc. Or you will find yourself :doh: when the forum starts growing and your partner that had this information is no where to be found (or just ignoring you for the hell of it).

i prefer to do it on my own. i never really enjoyed my last partnerships, although maybe its cause usually i end up as the one who doesnt get to do anything.
