Which free forum software is your favorite?

MyBB surpasses all free forum's look AND customization ability.

 

Simple Machines Forum is just... just... yucky.

 

As I said, it makes moldy food look pretty. I saw SMF and then I went to my bro's room. I prefer to stand in that smell than working/looking/posting at a SMF forum.

 

Wow, that is quite a statement - depending on the types of smells coming out of his room.

 

The Zeta Boards script will never be available for download, I can promise you that. The owners are all for the money... Ok, so you need to make money to keep running such a service, but you don't need to rip off your loyal customers. They even have the cheek to offer a 'Premium' service, with no actual worth while benefits.

The Zeta Board ACP is the most basic I've ever seen. It doesn't even have the ability to distinguish between a human visitor and a spider/bot.

It's a great platform if you're just starting out with community forums. Much like Pro Boards.

Speaking of Simple Machines Forum, what are your thoughts on the development of v2.x.x?

I'd have to agree. Over the years, MyBB has developed into a superbly coded, excellently designed forum script.

 

I just saw some screenshots... O..M..G... if that is 2.0 =\ Dude, wtf! I get it's free! But quality!?!?!? Seriously, SMF is a let down.

Looks the same. SMF=Lameness... I would like to know who the hell their designer is, so I can slap them for making such atrocity. I am not the best designer, but hell =|.

 

Even if the design were to be drastically improved, I would still not use the script. There also wasn't much of a "feature upgrade" between 1.x.x and 2.x.x.

 

Me either, I'd prefer invisionFREE over SMF.

 

I think what really needs to be done is this: a complete and total re-write of the code.

Admittedly, I have used Simple Machines Forum in the past, when I was first starting out. After closely examining phpBB and feeling the levels of disgust building up inside of me, I almost immediately went on over to SMF - after all, it was the "other" free forum software script that people were raving about. It had a unique administrative interface, a creatively designed user profile interface, and a great set of features... what was not to like?

Shortly after using it, I realized that every positive comment listed above in the last sentence was a load of BS.

 

I tried SMF so I could expand my design knowledge. SMF is a designer's nightmare.

Sometimes I think that SMF was made by 21 year olds who ended their second year in programming.

 

I think all free forum scripts should migrate to MyBB and vBulletin for paid. Then you have essentially the same script, but a free and paid version. :p

(Imagine every forum you see is either MyBB or vB. )
