HostGator is really the only one on my list because I've haven't had much experience with any others. I like HostGator though.

To be quite honest guys hosting server yourself is probaly more affordable in the long run and you have way more control then one remotely. Most of my domains are through 000domains which i do love their speed and support but to be honest i now do it all from home its cheaper more reliable and its easier to monitor attacks. Its also funner (if thats a word) to try and track the hackers back through all the proxies and then attack them its like a mini wargame

    1. Liquid Web
    2. A Small Orange

(for VPS hosting. Switched for shared)

leet, I agree. The only problem with that is that it's less convenient and a lot of us aren't tech savvy enough to do it ourselves.

After being hosted with HostGator for a few months now, I would like to give them a thumbs up.

For small sites I think A Small Orange is the best choice. It's far more expensive than competition but then again you get much better performance and support than the cheaper ones. They also are better with things that typically are ignored such as maximum mysql connections etc.

I ran a rather large scale site (which is now very much dead because I didn't and refused to offer something my competition eventually got) which hosted large files for download and it would basically max out people's connections. It would chug up about 30-40gb of bandwidth a day (some days depending on "large" releases it could go up to 100-120). In any case in my experience it was much busier than other sites I have participated in. I used www.gfxgaming.com as my host. Not very well known but GREAT performance.

Right now I only use Ubiquity. I no longer touch shared hosting or VPS any longer - if I am not personally in full control of the server, I am not comfortable.

The only other irc-friendly hosting companies out of Chicago that I am aware of are Steadfast (expensive) and Sharktech (ISP: Comcast).

During my site's incubation periods, like the first 12-36 months depending on topic, I use shared hosting. Once they've grown, I move them on.

For my incubation hosts, I typically use the low cost folks like Justhost, Bluehost, etc. For my experienced sites, I've really enjoyed URLJet.

I don't have experience with enough web hosts to have a Top Five list, but HostGator has been mostly ok for my needs. I hope to have my own server someday though.

Glad to hear Hostgator has improved. I had them back during the vB2 days for one of my old, old boards and they kept claiming the site was getting hacked. Site used no mods and was always updated but they always pointed the finger at me despite never being able to produce any logs to validate their claims. This was back in 2002.

Hostrocket for me. Those guys over there were the best since I moved to my own server and started my own.
