Have you ever hosted your own email?

A lot of my email accounts are hosted with Google Apps as I was grandfathered in before they went paid. However, newer accounts are using Squirrel Mail until I figure something else out. Any suggestions?

 

I haven't got this figured out yet but I believe Postfix + Squirrelmail is going to be my way to go. I have some experience with both of them from my previous job (about three years ago) and I remember it was a pretty good solution.

I do plan to send bulk mail and that's one of the reasons I want to manage my own mail server but I'm still open to the idea of using a third party service if I can afford it. I just haven't decided that one yet.

But of course. Using sendmail on Linux (Debian) and UNIX (Solaris).

 

Yeah I used to run Postfix on my CentOS server (RedHat) however that server crashed. Now I just use the email hosting my name registrar provides.

I have had a lot of fun managing my own mail client, using SquirrelMail, which Jaymsgq already suggested. Even though it might be a bit overwhelming at first I think you'll enjoy setting it up. Also, offering email registrations to users of your site is a fun extra to offer and might attract more visitors to your site!

 

I do the same but my main sites e-mail uses Google apps and is routed through Google servers. This helps me major sure my email is almost guaranteed to be delivered, and makes it easy on my phone.

 

Well I know this is an old topic but I finally was able to host my own email. The trick was done installing Postfix, Dovecot and SquirrelMail in my server. I followed this guide: Setup Mail Server using Postfix, Dovecot and SquirrelMail in CentOS/RHEL/Scientific Linux 6.3 step by step. I just needed to tweak things a little bit because I'm running Ubuntu Server.

 

I tried to host an email service early in the 2000s when spamming was not yet a problem, but as soon as people starting abuse the system, I had to cancel it.

Actually all my domains have an email service setup, but it redirects all messages to a central Gmail account.

 

When I ran multiple forums I use to have a in house email system. Meaning that if you wanted to email a user you can use their forum email.The concept was pretty popular at first until we had massive spam. I had to get rid of that feature because the massive amount of spam caused server issues.

 

I typically let Comcast handle company email. Their servers have been bouncing back a lot of automatic mailings lately, so that might be changing.

 

I'm hosting my own email for a few domains. Using Zimbra's open source edition in a virtualized environment. Works really well!

 

Since getting and using my own TLDs, I've always hosted them locally on the cPanel server it was located on for nice easy management in one place, and then recieved them via POP/IMAP on programs like Outlook
