Being a full time webmaster is more draining then I thought!

Right now I am both feet in and ready to run with it LOL! I wanted a server and I bought a server and got it online. And getting it online wasn't easy there were problems that I had to figure out but now its up and running. I have a total of 6 different domains and tonight I made websites for 5 of them and semi populated one.

I wanted to be busy and there is no doubt that I am busy. Tonight I am sitting here and my brain is fried. I need to go to bed and get a full recharge so I can start all over again in the morning. I had no idea being a full time webmaster would be so draining. But the funny thing is I can't get enough of it LOL.

I think i can be a lot more relaxed once I get the websites built. What I want to know is how do people handle 100+ websites? LOL!

Most people I know with 100+ (heck, 20+) sites either use automated content methods, pay content writers, or the sites are static.

A client and buddy of mine with 60+ sites actually has a fairly complicated scheduling system for site updates. She schedules time to plan updates/overhauls, time for content procurement (whether it be hiring a writer or doing it herself), and time for execution.

Sites are category A, B, or C depending on how much income they generate with A being the highest. Last I asked Category A sites were weekly or biweekly, B sites biweekly or monthly, and C was at least by monthly or longer between updates.

I've seen her Google Calendar, it's pretty sick. She spends a crazy amount of time on statistics but it seems to work for her she's killin' it as they say.

 

Well that is a dream of mine, I would love to be as you say "Killing it" but I know I have lots to learn and I am in this for the long haul not short term. It should be smooth sailing once I get my divorce out of the way. That's the only thing holding me back right now. And hopefully it will be over with in the next 60 days.

It would be hard work with just 3 or more sites, let alone 60 but fair play to here and if she is reaping the rewards from get dedication and hard work then it's all deserved!

I have 3 sites up at the moment but there's only the newest one i work on fit now. The other 2 I've left dormant for a while.

 

I plan on taking it slow and not doing anymore then I can handle. I do this as a hobby and I don't want to make it feel like work.

If it doesn't feel like work you ain't doing it right. What I mean by that is there is nothing wrong with enjoying your work but if you intend to/want to be profitable you have to think of it like a job.

Me: I love playing with new software, software conversions, moving sites between servers and the challenges that come along with that. I'm not the best at dealing with people. That's where the work part comes in when running a forum. I don't necessarily want to do it but need to.

For instance, tomorrow I'm converting one of my forums from vBulletin to Xenforo. Do I really want to spend what might be one of the last decent Saturdays of the summer in front of a computer? No, I'm already late doing it so I'll spend a few hours tomorrow morning and hopefully have the afternoon to myself.

 

I have a friend who can have it up and running in just minutes! She's been doing them for years now. We are planning on possibly starting a new website together, a forum. Between the two of us we can easily manage it. I threw the idea out at her yesterday and it piqued her interest so now I am starting to contemplate where I'm going to start the marketing and advertising. I'm sure you will get a handle on yours and you can share the progress.

 

I get what your saying and I would love to make money from it one day. But I guess what I am trying to say is I don't want to feel forced to do something. I am putting in a lot of hours and having lots of fun. And I want it to continue to be fun.

I know what you mean Greg. I know what you mean. Getting older and, at the same time, getting wiser is draining sometimes. As long as it is fun and you are following your passion, you can easily overcome any drainage.

Do you do other work as well apart from being a Webmaster?

I'm sure a lot of people are like me, who have a full time job as well as trying to run their sites. It takes a lot out of you trying to fit everything in especially with family life as well. But I hope that one day it will pay off and start paying towards my mortgage lol.

 

No I am on disability so I have nothing but free time. I have been on disability for the last 11 years.

Ahh then at least you can us e your free time and turn it into a small hobby which in turn would hopefully turn into a little business venture for you and get some extra income from
