I'm new, with newbie-like questions!

Hi there!
I finally got around to joining, simply because I'm tired of searching the internet whenever I have a computer problem, looking through forums to hopefully find somebody who already asked the same question and got an answer. So, I joined this here Alien Soup. However, you guys are all way more advanced than I am - building your own computers and whatnot, but you seem friendly enough that I won't get laughed at for my seemingly simple questions, which I suppose I won't post here in the Newbies forum. Though I do have a newbie-related question: Seeing as your membership/posting policies aren't very extensive, I wasn't too sure on what was allowed as topic for posts. Like asking for help on "illegal" activity. (For example, how to forego the "30 day trial" feature on free program in order to use them indefinitely.) So, I've seen some places that were loose on that, others who were entirely against it, so could someone clarify for me the policy on that here? Thanks.

While we don't have an official policy on such things, it's safe to say that those types of discussions would be frowned upon. This is a forum that fosters family-oriented discussions, and circumventing copyright law and licensing agreements certainly doesn't fall into that category.

 

Welcome to the soup. We are very good about answering questions about computer problems, however we do tend to ignore pleas for how to break the copyright laws, there are plenty of other sites that discuss such activities. So ask all the technical questions you want, but keep the illegal stuff on the illegal sites.

Now with that said, prepare to initialized (ie probed)

 

Thanks for the welcomes, and for answering the questions. Just a note - illegal questions aren't the reason I joined, I come up with several perfectly moral questions as well - wish I could say I joined to assist and discuss other topics but I seem much less advanced. The only reason I ask about that sort of question is I have absolutely no other way to get a particular program other than to scam it. I know that's not an excuse, that's just the only circumstance under which I would consider it. I highly respect the family oriented content here. Though it would do me some good, I'm not really a fan of the forums that focus primarily on that kind of activity. So, I'm gonna go exploring soon; anything on here of particular interest or entertainment I should check out? (Obviously all of it, but any favourites?) Thanks again for the warm welcome!

 

also i'm sure if you got to know some of us outside the forums here (i.e., in our chat) we might be able to help every now and then. but google is good too

Well thanks - good to know. (Haven't had any luck with google this time, unfortunately).

Off to do some more exploring, been to a few forums, they're great. This place is cool!
