Have you ever been hacked?

Ya, its ridiculous. The guy they blamed is also a coder/developer, and the competitor is 17, she likes to troll and make bad reputations for people. Its ridiculous.

 

Wow I hate people like that its very hard to deal with trolls like that specially when you run a site.

 

I've been hacked but I believe it was only for a little while some sub-zero hacker guy who liked mortal kombat a little to much. (:

It doesn't matter what the genera of forum a person runs. That's a dirty trick for any type of forum to pull in my opinion. It doesn't matter if you run a general discussion or an RPG forum, hacking is hacking... it is a crime, and staging a hacking even as a so-called joke is not amusing at all, nor is it funny. So really, it doesn't matter what sort of forum you have, that is one joke right there that should never be tolerated. Anyone who thinks of pulling a fast one like that on my forum, I'd probably be getting the ban hammer out so fast it would make their head spin. That's how much offense I take to forum hacking, especially making jokes about it. In fact, we even have a rule in our Laughter Zone that jokes about hacking are not tolerated what-so-ever.

 

My first general discussion forum (since sold) was hacked once.
My graphics forum (since sold) was hacked twice.

It's all about add-ons, they get in through security flaws in the add ons.

 

I can still remember when all those Forumotion forums were hacked last year, and Rich kept getting blamed when the Hazey was still up and about all because they have mod and theme installation services and we all know how good he is with coding, installing mods and themes, etc. I've never used their phpBB installation services, but I've heard nothing but awesome reviews about Rich's work. I didn't beleive it for half a second when people were pinning the blame on Rich, because Rich even said himself that when someone requests an installation services, he always remembers to take himself out of the founder group and to cover his tracks with the Cpanel usage.

 

Yea you gotta be careful with which addons you have installed. 2 days ago a forum got hacked because of that, it was running vb 3.8.7 and the person got in through an exploit in one of the mods.

 

What add ons were you using?

 

it was vBulletin, so quite a lot. It's a long time ago, can't give you a specific list..

 

Yep. My forum, going very well at the time, was taken down in May 2008.
I was pissed, so pissed.

But we started again from scratch, and forgot it even happened. Probably for the better too, since we improved the forum so much from one to the next.

 

Did you not have any backups or anything? How much data was lost due to this?

 

I've only been hacked once, and it was by a hacker that didn't do much damage on a dead blog of mine. So really I don't think that counts but it's a hack nonetheless.

I have been hacked once, and have learned since to make regular backups.

Have you thought about switching to a different forum software? I remember one of my competitors used to be on myBB, they got hacked about two times and then a few months later they decided to make the switch to vBulletin.

 

Time to change software.

 

Dashing got hacked the other day due to a flaw with the Facebook Connect plugin. Otherwise, nothing on sites that I run.

However, a site I previously owned got hacked after I sold it cause it didn't update.
