Sometimes in a forum's life, there comes a time where you have to fire a staff member for whatever reasons. I know I've fired moderators before because they failed to log in for a while, or be active.
    ?
How about yourself? Have you ever fired a staff member? What's the message that you send them?

I have fired staff members for being inactive, and leaving me the same level of work that I had that I needed to delegate to them in the first place.

I also have fired staff members for letting the rank get to their heads, and stating things that they should not state in front of the community.

Yes I was fired from being support staff at a host just because I decided to help my friend set up his host

I have fired staff for in-activeness, and not helping around, when I was putting in the same hard work that I was doing before hiring them.

Yea, some staff are going to get a shock when the inactive boot gets chucked, I estimate to lose at least half of the people we put on trial to be booted for inactivity

Rofl, see how hard it is to get decent staff? You have to boot half of them lol.

Yes, I think what it is, is that they expect to get something (hosting) for nothing, and don't understand the principles of working hard for it...

Haha... why they say it right in the application or something? I get some funny emails of people wanting to advertise their sites for free on AdminBB, and other useless ones that give me a good laugh lol.

Well its ok to fire a staff member with a reason. One of my friends lost a lot of posts and members because he didn't fire an moderator that got angry because his suggestion was rejected . He was so angry he deleted 400 posts and 100 members from the forum. So when I see a staff member not doing his job as he should I fire him.

I did remove one of my members on my previous forum from staff...he broke the most rules out of anyone. Lesson learned: don't give your friends staff privileges unless they actually are fit for the position.

Yes, quite a few unfortunately. I'd rather not have to, but being a webmaster, there will come a time when it has to be done.

A few have been due to inactivity, but worse for a couple of my ex-mods, was for breaking one of my sites rules. MY site is all about giving, and totally prohibit trading, selling of any kind. We had a couple of mods found selling and trading, which looks bad on me as an owner as i make the rules and my staff are doing the opposite :(

Being fired for using your knowledge and know-how to help a friend do something similar? That's pretty stupid, and it sounds to me like the owner of said host that you were fired from was downright immature to fire anybody for just passing on their know-how to a newbie. Wowzers.

On an older forum I had, I had one moderator who was afraid to post at all. This went on for at least a week, probably. Finally losing my patience with him (and not knowing what was going on at the time) I dropped the moderator a PM asking him how come he never posted, as that was, and still is, the requirement of most staff members. I say MOST because if you're like Ashley.S. and run a host of your own, or if you have your own forum to run, then you may be excused from your duties, especially if things are super busy at your site or you have a lot to do overall. Anyway, the moderator responded back to my PM and said that he wouldn't post because he'd been made fun of on other forums because of the way he posted. I reassured him that this would not happen on my forum, and if it did, well, that's what I was there for was to put a stop to it. Unfortunately, this commenced happening, and in the end I demoted him because if you're so afraid to post for fear of being made fun of, then why the heck did you apply for the job or agree to help in the first place?

I'm dead serious. It didn't happen on the current forum or the old Chatting Time... this happened when I was still using a free host. SMF For Free to be exact. Well, what would you have done if someone came up to you and said they wouldn't post because they were afraid of being made fun of? Wouldn't that call for an instant demotion in your case as well? Especially if the little game of "Cat and Mouse" kept up, which is basically the game this particular moderator was playing with me. And this was a GENERAL DISCUSSION FORUM for crying out loud. Yes, you still have to write so that we can understand you, but even if you're not perfect, as long as we can still understand what you're saying it's all good.
