What is your experience with phpBB? I have loved it everytime I have used it. It can be used for professional boards, as well as laid back and fun forums.. it is very versatile. A great team behind it with a good (non trolling) community of support. A huge MOD database and articles on how to mod it yourself. Easily customizable with their in-admin template editior. All around great for me
While I like the software, it screams "attack me" just like vbulletin does on the paid side. I do NOT like the lack of support to newbies, they are rude rather than answering questions. And unless it has changed in recent months, I despise their install/upgrade instructions. Way too confusing for the average admin who just wants to run a forum. Too many other good open source or free forum packages out there to choose from....lol.
Agreed. But i guess the complexity will be reduced once the hook system is brought up. Personally it happened to be my favorite one until i found MyBB.
I agree with elizabeth as well, I find it installing modifications is a really pain, Just for simple ones too. Only phpbb and SMF are the only forums i know of that don't have hooks still.
Actually XenForo doesn't yet either but that part of the system is still undergoing work which is why the design houses and the major coders, while on board and release some stuff, is saving their best stuff for later. We know that is being worked on and changed. But even if it stays the way it is thru it's first release, it won't be a big issue.
It has potential but to be honest I find it kind of buggy at times like when your forum gets real big it will be real slow and laggy. I hate the things you have to do when installing a mod. But there are some really nice themes for phpBB.
The only themes I like from phpBB are the ones created by Chrishtian Bullock, his themes are the best. But yea MyBB themes are awesome.
I was initially turned off in the phpBB 2 days since they didn't have audits till late in the 2.0 series and man, it didn't even have a quick reply, let alone half the stuff SMF had (which I was with at that time). They've gotten better, but they still don't look close to being as modern as many of the other software. It's about time they add a plugins system, but what's so special about it? MyBB has had one for five years now.
I love it, the only downside is the amount of manual labour it takes to mod it, but this is apparently starting to change as of phpBB 3.1.x
I have a good amount of experience with it. I'm confident doing installations and in the ACP. I'm not the best with the coding side of it, however I can install MODs.
I admit, PHPBB looks a little old-fashioned compared to some of the newer softwares, and even ones that are old but still look nice, but I like it all the same. I still get confused with permissions every now and again, but at the same time that's what I have Ashley.S. for, as he knows more about the PHPBB permissions than I do. I'm good at remembering what something does when it comes to promoting someone to a group position or banning someone or whatever, but I'm always stuck as far as creating new positions/usergroups. That one always gets me.
I actually think phpBB3 is a well organised ACP, it's just so big that it may seem like a maze to new users. I still think it's an improvement to the frame on the left in phpBB2 though.
its a night mare for me with PHPBB3, coz i am a non techie, first started my forum with some blah and entered into PHPBB3,really the mod system sucks.....its very hard for code edits and many times i have experienced SQL errors..... i really lost some months of valuable time on PHPBB3, now i am using MYBB ad in a month i got around 200+ members to my site, and i am running it like a swift.......thnkx to mybb team for their awesome support....... so my thumbs down for PHPBB..its my opinion no offence guys....
