I've run this by the Google webmasters forum and thought I would run it past you lot as well.

While doing some domain searching today I've come across a domain that is available in my niche, and is very similar to an already successful forum/blog/site.

The question I'm asking is as the popular site is a .com domain, would buying the .net domain give me a leg up in organic searches ?

Only real reason to buy the .net and .org of same domain name, that you might run a site on the .com one. Mainly to stop others setting up a site using same domain as you... should your site become popular to stop others cashing in off back of it. Having them all and then redirecting others like .org and .net to the .com won't make much difference, it's not like those other TD extensions have content on them being indexed and are just redirects.

Unless running an online company or you expect your site to become very popular. Better just saving your money really and not bothering getting the others ones. Just go for best one, the .com

You would probably gain some traffic intended for other site, yes. Which is what I said, others cashing in off the back of a popular site if they didn't take the .net and .org as well e.t.c. How much benefit you get from doing it I'm not sure. People who already know the other site would be quick to leave yours after landing on it knowing a mistake was made - they landed on wrong site they wanted too.

Bit risky I think as well. Not sure if you do that off the back of another hugely popular site that's been around ages before yours, if that site has some-kind of rights to actually take the domain TD away from you if they pursued it.

There is no difference in seo rankings in .com or .net Google treats them the same
