can sumone honestly tell me that this is needed if im the only admin and going to stay the only admin? If needed can sumone help me with the set up? I mean i can do it..but would feel better with ya'll backing me!
Why would you want to change it? All you would be doing is locking yourself out of certain functions in your admin panel. Why handicap yourself?
Uhhhhhh, what are you talking about? For one - you need 2 admin accounts, not one. Just in case you lock yourself out of the account. I dont understand the question about what you need?
Your the only Admin, until you add another person to the Admin usergroup or simply a new usergroup with admincp access. You can do it.
Actually, this isn't necessary. The tools.php file can restore your administrative access if you accidentally lock yourself out.
No you don't. If someone is the only admin and some how manage to lock themselves out of the AdminCP, 1. you shouldn't be an admin. 2. You're an idiot for doing it. Upload tools.php to the admincp and restore access. 2 Admin accounts double the chance of having an admin account compromised.
Its standard operating procedure to have 2 admin accounts. Whether your a network administrator, your home computer, your forum,,, you want to have a backup admin account. tools.php? When I am at my brothers house, or my moms house, or on my laptop 1,500 miles away from home - I do not always have access to tools.php. Having a second admin account does not increase your chances of getting hacked - because nobody knows about it. Seriously, have yall never taken a computer class, or a networking class at college? When your working on an admin/system wide level, that is one of the first things your taught. Install the server, create a second admin account, install updates - in that order.
I never said you shouldn't have a second admin account (nor did I say you should). You stated that you need two admin accounts, just in case you lock yourself out. I simply pointed out that this is not true, because of tools.php. Can't you go download the files from your vBulletin Member's Area? What if both accounts are compromised? Then what?
Two Admin accounts? I've been running my forum for five years now and never needed a second admin account. I disagree that it is a necessity nor that it should be "standard operating procedure".
IPB, no matter your usergroup, if your the first user, you can still have adminCP access. Should be the same with vBulletin. You can login no mater you usergroup, www.yoursite.com/admincp/index.php
Some modifications such as Cyb login to user account require you to be superadmin, so I'd reccommend it.
i know what ur saying here... actually had to do this b4 when i first started....dont really remember why either...lol... but anyways... so should I go in to whatever and make myself (member #1) a super admin even tho i'll always be the only one in the admin usergroup?
I've read on one of the vB forums that it IS a good idea to have at least two accounts, one admin and one non-admin account. The idea is that you would post only with your non-admin account, and do all of your admincp business with your Admin account. And now that I think about it, I believe I also read something about NOT leaving your admin account as a super admin unless you need to perform some function where it is necessary. It's easy enough to go into your config file and change your super admin status, but one thing you DO NOT WANT is for someone to gain access to your super admin account and perform an SQL query that takes down your forums. I know this directly contradicts my earlier post, but I do see the logic in it now.
