i have seen many forums who have a page for their forum on facebook and on other social networking sites.

    what makes this successful?

i see some forums just updating theirs every few days with a link to their forum, or just posting updates about their forum.

i dont think that works, cause most people who see that will not want to join, as they see it as spam-i usually avoid joining pages like that, and if a page i like starts doing that i usually hide it from my news feed so i cant see it.

i prefer it when page owners post interesting content about the subject of the forum, as well as updates and other forum related stuff. it makes me want to check out the website that the page is about.

i dont like the other way you can advertise your forum on facebook though-ive seen people doing it a lot, they go on as many pages as possible and just spam their site everywhere. that doesnt work, people dont like that and will not join their forum, other page owners just see it as spam to be deleted, and members usually just ignore it. they can also get banned for it too i think.

I think it can work if you know what you are doing on there. I dont think having a page to like and such on there helps with traffic other than bringing people who already like your forum back to it if theyve forgotten about it.

I market myself and sites on every outlet I can find.
Facebook can be a GREAT source of traffic if done correctly.

I think it is very a wise idea to market in facebook since millions are using it. Facebook is searchable. This makes people to find your product and services more easily. Have you created a page that is useful to users?

We have facebook, twitter and youtube accounts for RPGD. Twitter is actually linked to Facebook. Twitter we use for quick updates who are submitted by staff, with a twitter box actually located on our sidebar. Further people who follow us on facebook can post on the D's wall and advertise their site or just leave a comment. It's not used that much, and we could probably do more with it. But for now I'm fine with it.

There are however lots of people who our forum is for on facebook and twitter.

I added an automated twitter bot that posts hot topics off the forums and I saw an immediate rise in traffic. Granted we also saw a rise in spam accounts which we had to deal with separately. But Facebook and Twitter and definite sources of traffic if they are done properly.

As a person on the other end (looking at forums promoting themselves), I don't like to see sites that are constantly putting nonsense up on their pages. Keep it relevant and keep it semi-informative otherwise its just spam and people will unfollow or unfan the account and you've lost them from that social media site.

I love to use FaceBook as a way to promote. Me owning a game forum, I often post on the "Machinima" page. This gets you alot of interest.

Facebook is the number one social network and this is very useful and effective to gather massive traffic and increase page rank of your site in the Google search engine.

Created a facebook page recently, bought in a few visitors but no new members as yet.

That's the problem with Facebook and Twitter. They bring in a lot of visitors. Problem is those visitors don't convert well to members.

It will get members, just not the amount you would think with the amount of extra traffic it brings.
