a user named "dmrt" signed up to a forum i am on, and did some pretty bad spamming, a whole 2 pages of the off topic section filled with spam posts about something......probably similar to viagra. you really should avoid letting this member join your forums, lol :rofl:
We had a bad spammer when we opened, And due to us being opened we didn't leave time to check everything and we had no reCaptcha, No verify email and didnt ban username with the word admin,mod,supermod etc. I then banned all usernames which containing the above aswell as drugs and that, I then turned on verify email and turned ReCaptcha on. This guy making about 5+accounts had begun spamming more slowly (once banned of other account and turned all the things on mentioned above) however he was still coming back, So i decided to ban his IP and my luck IP Deny Manager wasn't working so i had to do it maunally, Then he was changing his ip, So i blocked of all bits which contain the X, 192.168.X.X (obviously wasn't 192, Just an example of an IP) which was something like: deny from 192.168.* And since then he hasn't been back. I also installed Akishmet (think thats how you spell it) which took care of a few posts.
I simply banned a lot of known email sufixs and IP listed on stopforumspam.com. This really helped me out a lot. Here is a list I posted..double check the sufix, I accidently added gmail.com and Ymail.com. http://www.adminaddict.net/forum/member-staff-management/spammer-email-sufix-list-2900/
Did you add the spammer to the "stop forum spam" site? Any forum using the stop forum spam modification will then block that spammer from signing up.
