I'm going to be converting two large vBulletin forums over to IPB, but does anyone know the availablilty of IPB 4 and their suite of products to go with it?
Last estimate that was posted was last quarter of 2013, first quarter of 2014. Since 4th quarter is out and 1st quarter is more than half over I would say it will be closer to end of the year. It is a complete rewrite and many things are changing so they are not going to rush it.
What ever IPB is doing with version 4 i do not think they want to do a vBulletin release. They will make sure that its usable from beta and nearly perfect when gold.
It will, because they have a lot riding on it really with XenForo on a flier adding new features to challenge IPB sales much more in the future. I have noticed looking at the pie charts that it's not only vBulletin losing sales to XF, but even IPB are, all be it very small percentage. So they need to come up with something good.
The UI is partially revealed within http://community.invisionpower.com/blog/1174/entry-9641-40-ipdownloads-submission/ The style looks really good.
I hope xenForo hires a User Interface person to bring that software up to date design and flow wise. Leaves a lot to be desired from its hiatus. Glad IP.Board finally is showing something. Competition is good.
It looks amazing, but it sucks that it's still not available They really made a big mistake with announcing Q4 2013 / Q1 2014 Edit: http://community.invisionpower.com/forum-305/announcement-30-what-new-in-ips-community-suite-40/
Thanks for that link ragtek, IPB 4 is looking pretty awesome. Q2 won't be much of an issue to wait for, heck I've waited years for vBulletin to become viable again from the 3.x days whats a few more months!
Q2 is anywhere from April 1st to June 31st, please remember, and it's not like that date is set in stone, is it?
It is! After they made already a mistake and announced a wrong they, they should have learned from it and should have posted somewhere in 2014 and not Q2 if they're not 100% sure. If they deley it again, it would be a reason for me to rethink the planes and search for other alternatives! Yes, they're not rushing to release something halfbaked, but IF they don't get it out in Q2, it would show that they haven't lerned from the last months and are just giving stupid dates to the clients, just to have posted a date. Again, i'm saing ONLY => If they're not sure when they'll finish it, they SHOULDN'T announce Q2 2014!
Well it is not like i will be able to upgrade right away simply because i need to wait on the developers to do their thing and of course work out the bugs....so as it stands, now that i think about it...while i am excited for 4.0 i am not going to worry about how long it takes. Besides after the mess with xenforo last year, i can wait a little longer(and i think more people can too if they look at how things were with XF last year).
Well if that's the new theme it will use, you can see in that Download Attachment video on IPS. I'm not that impressed to be honest with the new look, looks very basic in design and thought they might have tried to have challenged XenForo's default theme a little better than the one used in that video. Don't know, guess I was expecting something very different in IPB 4 from the norm we've been used to seeing in releases of IPB. Thought they might have made some big changes in this, but doesn't look like they have theme wise. Also looks to me in that video as though they've gone back to using a small font for text box. Not sure, but thought the current release uses a bigger font-size for writing with? Maybe the theme might grow on me later when seeing more of it on a live site, because do see it uses black bars and looks a little similar to the old IPB 2 Pro theme, one I did like.
Xenforo's default theme doesn't take much to challenge, tbh. It is not that impressive(especially with that color scheme) I think the new theme looks loads better than what we currently have.
IPB4 will be available in Q2 2014 http://community.invisionpower.com/forum-305/announcement-30-what-new-in-ips-community-suite-40/
I don't think they'll adjust it again, however I personally* would rather IPS4 be completed as much as it can be, polished etc before it's shipped than have a rush release as vB5 did. I think a lot of IPS's existing and potential customer base feels exactly the same. *personal opinion, not based on any prior product or company knowledge.
