Its better to restrict the usage of names like Admin,MOD..and what ever you like.. This can be done easily in vBulletin Options vBulletin Options >> User Registration Options >> Illegal User Names and then add the desired names which you wish to reserve many of will be knowing it , but we forget to add then  :woohoo: EDIT see this profile  Code: http://www.adminaddict.net/forum/members/admin/
I usually just ban symbols and non-ascii characters. Could care less if someone picks 'Sysop' some day.
I usually just ban anything that could be mixed up for staff. Don't see all the fuss about strange looking usernames, it annoys me not being able to register on a lot of forums due to my current username and I wouldn't make anyone else end up suffering because of that. However, I did learn the hard wa that you need to ban whatever equivalent code that any [you] tag modification is in usernames, since I ended up having some idiot register with [you] as a username and ending up having a completely identical name to whoever was reading their posts.
unforunately for my site i need to add heaps of players and officials names to the illegal list as some clowns from what they believe as a rival site keep signing up and posting as if they are an official for a sporting team or a player and just full on abuse us because it must be the cool thing to do or something.
We have rectified this issue. Usually I disallow usernames that contain admin, mod, staff, owner. There are so many ways around it, so it's just something I would rather deal with on a case-by-case basis.
