Do you really need on a forum? And yes, I know it depends on the size but to be honest, one person can handle a forum til it hits at least 100 people easily. Two at the most. You really don't need more staff until you get past the 500 point.

However, you may look like you have more staff then you really do. Example, I typically have two accounts on my forums. One is the Admin account for official stuff. One is my account for the not so official, day to day stuff. Sometimes, I add a third if I have to have someone come in and test something. But I run a forum alone until it hit 25 members. Add one staff to 100.

    Your thoughts?

I agree with this... my forum had 5k of users to control I had to hire 10-11 mods and 2 s.mod's

I agree with you. I say 1 admin and 1 s. mod is enough until 200, then you may want to hire section mods. But 1 admin is enough.

We have 3 admins on our site because 1 admin is the technician in a way, keeps the site up to date and from any errors etc. 1 admin does the host payment and I myself bring in the flow of members and keep the site active.

I have 500 members, I have 2 admins and 2 mods. Is more than enough for my forum.
It all depends on the forum though.

I agree the forum genre is also important depending on how hard or easy it will be to moderate.

We have almost 70 members, but I only have a tech-administrator at the moment. We had one moderator, but had to demote him for inactivity. I think we'll be okay running the forum on our own for now. If it starts getting really active, I'll probably hunt around for a second moderator, but for now I'm not too worried about staff at all.

Yea I see your point. Its just me and BlazingBlue staff here at the moment. I dont plan to hire anyone else until we get 100 more members.

Well, seeing as we've had no problems with spam/hacking since the beginning, and my tech/co-administrator and I are on almost daily, we're usually pretty good about stopping things before they get too out of control... So I think even if you're on daily, and you are not overly active yet, I wouldn't worry about a lot of staff members for the moment.

We are really active for a new site. We have been open for less than a week, and 50+ members and almost 1000 posts... so judging that in two more weeks we will be blooming.

All that was said here is right. You don't need that many mods. If this site was a site that could lead to discussions about how one thing is better than another. Then I could see how a forum like that would need more Mods. And Yes this site has been booming all in a week.

I agree with all of you if amin is just for admin. In my area, forums has many moderators. A sub-forum has a moderator, some even has a associate moderator. The Chinese title of moderator is "board master". Before I start up my forums, I had be member of a forum. There is a webmaster, two admin, around ten moderators.
There is only tens posts a day. In average, one staff moderate two posts! Why? They use title to attract visitor. Some member post for a moderator title.

Board master? That sounds like a more appropriate title for a tech admin or an owner/founder... although I can see why it would be that for moderators as well though, as they do need to know their stuff when it comes to helping with a forum. Because they need to know the basic functions like how to lock topics, move topics, that sort of thing...

I have three fellow administrators and one super moderator. My super moderator joined in 2007, but my fellow administrators joined in 2004 (the year the forum entered) and I worked with them for several years before my forum was even created. As hinted, my choice for administrators was not a matter of necessity; rather, I wanted people I trust dearly to be able to help as much as possible by having complete access to the AdminCP.

    Yes, I am crazy.

Seems like pretty devoted staff, pretty hard to get staff like that now.

I see what you mean. Its pretty hard to trust someone over the internet. Especially with a forum that size.

As others have said, I feel that the amount of staff needed depends upon the amount of users you have. I like to keep a decent staff to user ratio to keep things running as smooth as possible.
