The larger the pool of people, the more likely they'll have and attract talented or important people.

I joined it, and I'll also be creating a community on google+. I doubt it'll help bring in a lot more traffic, but it wouldn't hurt to try it out.

Google communities looks awfully confusing. What may be a worry is that Google knows the identity of your forum members and guests, better than you do. It would be a piece of pie for Google to suggest relevant communities to Google users.
